After his afternoon nap on the mantle behind the wood stove, my wife and I took our Bengal Makena out for a walk.

Why don't you join us?

Makena's pelt has very little insulation and he needs a jacket on cold days. We have a plain fleece and we have the heavy fleece with a nylon cover he is wearing here. He needs this heavier jacket when the temps fall below 40. Without the jacket - he heads back toward our home after being out for only 10 - 15 minutes.

We take Makena out nearly every day. Makena loves to hike and frankly, it is usually a high point in my day as well.

He frequently pauses to scan the area around for mice, chipmunks etc.

We always bring some treats with us and here Makena takes a few from his mum's hand

Then he gives mum a head butt....

"Look what I found!"

"What do you suppose lives in there?"

A downed tree presents an irresistible lure. Makena loves to climb - we don't trim his claws so he can get a good grip. The retractable lead is about 25 feet, we let him go as high as he wants.

Makena knows basic commands and listens very well, but he is not trained to simply follow our direction. We often want him to lead us: we want to see what interests him. The path we choose is often a collaborative effort. Makena would stay with us if he was not on a lead but if he saw a Racoon or Ground Hog there is a chance he would focus on that and not listen. For his safety we keep him on a lead.

We have covered a few miles of woods and fields and the temperature is starting to drop. Makena pauses for a yawn, and turns toward home.

My wife and I have talked about what is going on in each of our lives. Makena has gotten his fill of exploring. We have each found some fresh air and exercise. The sun is falling toward the horizon.

Makena took a chill on the way back and let me know with a few longish meows. I tucked him in my jacket for a few minutes till he warmed up and he asked to be put back down. Makena picked up the pace to stay warm as he led us back home.

Finally home, Makena sat by the wood stove to soak up the heat.

My wife and I made dinner.

Thanks for joining us on our walk, I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Eric

That was very nice.  Makena is very photogenic and you got some great shots of him.  Looks like Makena has a pretty interesting and comfortable life!

Thanks for the kind comments! I am curious to know if any others here hike with their cats?

After several cold and rainy days (and short walks!) it is a nice warm day today. I suspect Makena is going to have me out for a long time!

I enjoyed reading the story and viewing the photos of you and Makena's hike through the woods. It looked like a lot of fun.

To answer your question about if others on this forum hike with their cats, I do! I live in the middle of the woods on 10 acres, and often go on excursions through the forest with my cat, Wessie. He seems to love exploring all of the different nooks and crannies of the forest.

Nice to hear of someone else out with their cat!

One of the things I like about hiking with Makena is that he sometimes wants to go at a snails pace as he investigates "all of the different nooks and crannies of the forest." The slow pace forces me to stop and really appreciate just being out. Sometimes the slow pace lets me notice things I would otherwise miss: once it was an oddly shaped hole high up in a tree, with an owl peeping out! Another time it was snapping turtle deep in the high grass.

Beautiful! Where did you get the harness? I have a small dog harness for my cat because it fit better and was more secure for my cat.  Do people give you crazy person looks?  We took our cat through Starbucks with us and they said that it was a first to see a cat and they were sorry they only have dog treats.

Thank you!

The harness we currently use is a Kurgo dog harness which works well on Makena because of his unusually thick neck (for a cat.)  The harness is probably too heavy for most cats - works on Makena because he is pretty much 17 pounds of solid muscle.  You can't really see the harness in the pics above - its hidden by his jacket so I added a summer pic below.

I think the most popular harnesses are the types like Catbehaviours (above poster) has in his signature line - Petoodles Cat Harnesses. From what I have read that type seems to fit better and be more comfortable for the cat. We are going to try one of those next time around.

I occasionally get an odd look from people. Most of the time people are amazed at how well behaved and calm he is. Makena knows he is supposed to go over and greet anyone who talks to him - he does this grudgingly and usually has to be reminded to do it. In general he prefers to be in the woods or fields, but he tolerates areas with people.

I take Makena with me into stores sometimes. If they mention they have treats for dogs but not cats, I jokingly tell them to expect a letter from Makena's attorney about their "discriminatory" practices

Thanks! One of my boys is 15 lbs of moggie, but he is built very much like Makena, big neck and muscular front shoulders.  The small dog harness I have looks a lot like your jacket. I can get it on him, but it is too tight and the cat harness do not fit him. Mine go in pet smart, but they just want to see the fish and the birds. I love the letter from the attorney!
