Strange behavior has me concerned

My Regent is a 3-year-old Maine coon. We rescued him on the side of the road last summer, and he's been living with us since September. He has always spent the night with us upstairs, usually dozing at the foot of our bed or patrolling to check things out and then come right back. He is usually very affectionate. We have a standing meeting at 10:00 every night when I go to the bathroom and he expects a belly rub on the bathroom floor.

For the past three or four days, he has suddenly started acting strange. It started with him wanting to stay in our bedroom, even alone in the dark, during evenings while we ate dinner, just staring at the wall as if he's looking for lights or something. We do not play red laser with him because he does tend to get worked up over lights. But in this case, there were no strange or moving lights, nothing out of the ordinary. He just sat there staring at nothing for like an hour at a time. We would carry him downstairs and he'd run right back up there.

That went on for a day or two and he seemed to snap out of it.

Now his attention seems to have shifted to the downstairs. He doesn't want to go upstairs with us. When we carry him up there for bed time, he sits in the corner staring out into the hall, and as soon as he thinks we've forgotten him, he goes downstairs. He never destroys anything or makes a mess, but he's not doing it to sleep alone, either. When we come down to look for him, he's usually sitting in my husband's chair, wide awake, watching the front hall/front door.

He is staying on alert all the time. He only sleeps when my husband sits on the couch with him, which isn't enough for his sleep needs. He is tired, lethargic, actively avoids/runs away when I offer belly rubs, and generally seems unhappy. I offer to play with him, and he will humor me for five or ten minutes but will stop for the slightest excuse.

He is otherwise healthy: drinking lots of water, using the litter box, going up and down stairs with no trouble. Nothing in his diet has changed. I went through the house last night making sure every detail was set up like normal. He is acting as if he expects someone to break into the front door at any moment.

Help!!

Hmmm..... My first thought was maybe he can hear something outside that you can't.
Anything different happening around where you live that might be bothering him ? Or is it possible that a neighbour is using something like one of those electronic pet deterrents and he can hear the noise ?

My cats only withdraw from me when they are ill. One hides, prefers under the couch. One lays in the bathroom on the floor. One goes to our bed to lay during the daytime which is unusual for him and one goes into the front living room that we rarely use to be alone. I bring them to be with me and they go right back to the spot they came from. Has he had a vet check recently?

The thing is, cats as well as dogs have higher and more acute senses than we do.  So they can smell and hear things we may not.  There may be something wrong in the house, a  gas leak or vermin problem.  I would have a professional come and check.  Especially since it is winter (almost) and you are probably using heaters.  And this is the time of year that vermin will seek refuge in a nice and warm house.  It may be worrisome to him so take a cue from your cat.

Thanks for the replies! He had a healthy report from the vet a few weeks ago, and he recently coughed up his usual monthly hairball.

Tonight he came upstairs without being carried. We played some and he even purred during a belly rub. He is currently sitting on the floor by our bed watching the walls. At least he has stayed in the room with us so far.

My suspicion is also that he heard/saw something unbeknownst to us.

This may sound very silly and I don't know if i really believe it but have you or the previous owners of your house have a cat go to rainbow bridge and he's seeing a spirit/soul?
don't laugh.

Hey Stewball I have certainly advanced a few theories not too different from that! It is most likely a natural cause but my mind is open!

He just joined me in our bathroom suite and ate a little food. I will let you all know if/when he disappears.

Strange mystery. Belly rubs are always good. My cat knows if he gives belly he can have anything he wishes for.

Well he stayed upstairs with us for a little over an hour. He meowed for me to join him on the floor. We sat by the bed and watched the door together for a few minites. When I returned to my tablet, it didn't take him long to leave.

He is so tired that he keeps yawning and squinting. Yet I can't get him to be still.

He may be trying to tell you something?  Like I stated above, you may want to have your house checked for carbon monoxide and other gases or pests.  Just saying... This is exactly what a lot of people go through with their pets only to ignore it and almost die and find out later...

I think any of those theories could be valid. You could be getting " Visitations" or infestations. Mine all act like that ( we have mice we cannot get rid of without poisoning everything in the area plus our cats!! I'm in Colorado...so the Deer Mice are a nightmare ( they've already eaten my Jeep--twice)!
The one I worry about is gasses, fumes, etc. something he can smell but you can't! If you have lighted Christmas things up, that's another possibility. I'd pay close attention though, because he really sounds like he's worried about something.
Good luck, and be safe,
Connie

Yeah I'm going to talk to DH about checking some things in the house. Thanks for the advice.

I don't want to alarm you but my cat acted similarly all summer only to discover I had bed bugs. He was all comfortable for a while then he again began avoiding the dark, staring at corners and sleeping up high. And guess what? More bedbugs again.

He'll attack ants, watch roaches, and bat house centipedes, but bedbugs scare the heck out of him.

I was thinking the same thing; something paranormal.

The cat is definitely detecting something beyond our senses.

Could be he senses his original owner looking for him.

Okay I'm back with an update. The good news is we don't have any leaks. The culprit seems to be a rabbit who took shelter under our deck in the back yard. Regent seems convinced it has breached our perimeter and will thus invade our house.

He does have a problem with anxiety stemming from his near death experience. We have observed before that he is afraid of going outside and also very much afraid of intruders. We got him a calming collar. Between that and some extra reassurance he is doing better.

His previous owners had certainly not bother trying to find him now. He was abused and then left bleeding on the side of the road. We took him to an emergency vet where they said his body temperature was at brain damage level. Then he lived in the city shelter for 2 weeks while they looked for his owners. They even scanned his microchip and everything. Whoever left him intended on leaving on him.

But yeah, he has a tendency to over-react and this looks like one of those cases.

Tonight I finally got an answer on him staring at the wall in our bedroom. Our neighbor has a lighted Christmas decoration on their lawn and it's been casting faint light through the window blinds. Because we sleep with a night light we never saw it. Tonight we happened to go without the night light, and there on the wall was the faint trace of light through the blinds. He was standing up scratching the wall in that spot. How he saw it so faintly is beyond me.

I tightened the blinds to make the light go away. Regent has stopped attacking the wall but remains on guard to watch for a possible return.

Wow, that is so awesome.

Makes me wonder if Sinbad is going nuts for something like that. He's been zipping around pawing at a particular spot on the wall for the past week - and all my neighbors have installed christmas lights in that time, too.

Oh goodness!
Glad you found out what it was at last. I was going to say that you were perhaps, getting a visitation ( which is still a possibility). The things they can see that we can't has always amazed me me. Their hearing is remarkable as well, and both are better than mine, lol. Just very happy you don't think he's nuts. Poor Regent, staring at a very tiny light on the wall all this time. Love you baby, you're a most determined kitty! And very patient as well. [emoji]128522[/emoji]

Yes I am quite glad to know what was bothering him. A rabbit escaping the rain and a Christmas display outside... harmless things that sent him into panic mode. @Losna  the best advice I can offer is to be alert to possible clues and wait @Losnafor them to happen. I went through the house searching for details and that didn't work. If you think you have possible gas leak or insect invasion, get it checked out, but other than that, your naked eyes/ears won't see anything different until the circumstance works out for you to see it.

@ConiKatthere have been a few times when I suspect Regent did see/hear/feel something supernatural. At some point we should start a thread to discuss that.
