Hello, I will be introducing a new kitty to my current cat in a few weeks.  The kitty is at my family's house in a different city.  They took the cat, which was a stray, to the vet to get him healthy/ neutered before introducing him to my cat.   We just found out that he has roundworms today.  I am planning on bringing him home Christmas week (about 2 weeks from now).

Will he still be contagious?

If I separate him from my cat and keep him in another room, will that be enough to keep the worms from spreading? (They will only be separated by a door.)

How should I clean his bedding, toys etc, to kill the eggs?

Will I have to take extra precautions when interacting with new cat and then old cat?

How long should I keep them separate?  I was planning on doing the whole scent swapping thing with a towel or something.  When will it be safe to do this?

Finally, should I take my current cat to the vet before the new cat comes?  She seems healthy.  But I don't know if I should get her checked out just in case?

Thanks for taking the time to read!! I know that I have a lot of questions.

If he's been treated, you should be good to go, but you will still want to keep them separate until you've done proper introductions.  Here's a great article on how to properly introduce your cats to each other:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/introducing-cats-to-cats   If you want to keep the new one isolated until you're sure the worms are gone, then when you bring him home is the best time to do it.  They shouldn't share litter boxes until the little one is free of worms.

If you want, go ahead and get your current kitty to the vet and have her checked for parasites and the like.  Treat her for fleas and parasites if needed.  There are a lot of great threads in the behavior forum on introducing cats to each other, so take some time to read those so you'll be prepared for any possibility.

The vet gave my family some medicine for the kitty, but since they just picked him up from the vet today, I don't know when he will be considered to be treated.

So I've been doing more research and this is what I've found:

-As long as the cats don't share litter boxes, it should be okay

-Take cat back to vet 2 weeks after last round of meds for stool sample to make sure worms are gone

-Wash hands after petting cat

-Steam or poor boiling water on things that can possibly be carrying eggs, such as bedding, although it's unlikely to have eggs

-Clean litter boxes often and change litter and bleach litter box after cat is free from worms

Does anybody have any other advice?  Are any of these wrong?  I plan on calling the vet just to double check.  Thanks!
