I have just taken one of my cats to the vet and am shocked to find out he weighs 6.4kg! (14.1lbs) I knew he was probably overweight but I'm surprised it was that much (though the 1 minute walk to the vets during which I thought my arm might fall off probably should have been a tip off...). The vet said he should be about 5kg (11lbs) so I'm now on a mission to get him to shed a few pounds!

I'm not entirely sure where I'm going wrong though, as the vet didn't really give me any definitive answers, just 'food all varies, the more expensive the better, every cat is different'. Yeah thanks, might try another vet....

So at the moment I am feeding all three of my boys Smilla wet food. The fat content ranges between 5-7%, depending on the flavour. This is the contents of one...

Protein: 10.1%

Fat: 6.8%

Fibre: 0.4%

Ash: 2.1%

Calcium: 0.24%

Phosphorus: 0.21%

Moisture: 81%

How does that sound?? To my knowledge, I thought that was all pretty good? I used an online carb calculator which came out at 3%.

I feed him twice a day and he has 133g (third of a can!) a day in total. Not sure how this translates to cups but its about  1 1/3 pouches. He occasionally has a small handful of dry food too, maybe 1/8th cup? Not sure, very bad with cups.

Is this a lot? I really didn't think it was. My only other thought is that he is going into other houses and eating other cats food. I know he has done that with my neighbours before and he is a cheeky little devil like that!

Do you know the calorie or kcal content per can? Calories are more important than fat when helping a cat with weight loss. Here is some info on how to help a cat to safely lose weight: http://catinfo.org/?link=felineobesity You generally want to feed 20 to 25 calories per pound of ideal body weight per day.
