Hi All,

There can come a time with IBD when all normal treatments fail to control it including diet, probiotics, Vitamin B, Prednisilone (steroids) etc, and that time has sadly come for my cat Simon.  We are starting him on Leukeran, and so far no ill effects, no vomiting or lethargy which is great.  There is also a possibility that his IBD is changing into small cell lymphoma, but we are not going to put him through a second full biopsy especially as the treatment remains the same for either condition.  We did do a needle aspirate on some of his enlarged lymph nodes and no lymphoma was present there which is some good news.

He gets follow up blood work in 2 weeks to make sure red blood cell count remains ok, and we will do another ultrasound in a month to see if there are positive changes.

There have been threads that talk about how poorly some cats do on Leukeran, but my vet says 80% do ok, and I wanted to share a (so far) positive experience.

Here's my guy, he's 15, and my best friend.

He's a good looking guy! I really admire the fact that you're willing to go to any length to help Simon continue his love filled life, but especially appreciate that you aren't willing to put him through extra -and sometimes unessesary- bs. It's clear his quality of life is most important to you. I hope you continue to see positive results with the Leukeran. It seems that sometimes the only results we hear about are the bad results. Nice to hear something positive! [emoji]10084[/emoji]️[emoji]10084[/emoji]️ To Simon.

Many thanks!  He's a happy cat and just had a little lunch, some fresh cooked chicken :-)

Aw, Simon. He's got the cutest little mouth. Is this the same IBD/pancreatitis kitty that you mention every now and again? I know how hard you've been working to manage his condition.
  And I know what's it like to be up against these relentless issues in our kitties.  It's like a race...constantly trying to get ahead and beat the other guy (Mr. GI Disease).

I hope he does well on the Leukeran.

Yes this is the same cat, Simon, thank yo for asking.  His IBD went from average to severe the summer before last, but the only new symptom was weight loss (malabsorption).  He's been on Pred, diets, etc for that year and almost a half and it did well, full weight gain, and maintaining.  But now its back and we're dealing with it in addition to kidney insufficiency, pancreatitis and mild heart disease.  Lots of meds obviously plus now the Leukeran, twice weekly sub Q hydration, lots of vet visits and lots of $$, my pet insurance really helps with that.  All to give him quality of life for as long as we can.  Thank you for the vibes :)

I'm so sorry that Simon's IBD is progressing. I totally understand where you're coming from! I've now consulted with six vets (or is it seven?) and soon another for Sebastian's chronic pancreatitis. They all have something unique and different to add. I started out with Western medicine and then started exploring Chinese medicine and homeopathy with vets that specialize in such. My most recent consult was a holistic vet in Canada. Our regular (traditional) vet was kept in the loop through everything and is totally open to "whatever works". Although, I have to say, I think I've reached a saturation point as far as recommendations go. I could dig a little deeper into homeopathy, and I have a one or two other tricks up my sleeve that are on a wait-until-we-need-them list.

How was Simon's last ultrasound? Where are they seeing the most activity (bowel loops, pancreas)?

Anyway, you're doing great.

@GoHolistic

Thanks for the info and the support.  This is a tough time.  He's now having a bad reaction to the Leukeran.  Went to the vet today, supportive care, giving him a break and then maybe look at plan B.  His situation is changing daily and i'm not a fan of making daily updates so i'm going radio silent re: his condition for a while.

Thanks again.
