I rescued Mango as a 5 week old kitten from our local pound a year ago. At first, I thought she'd be a full long hair cat but she has short hair on her back but its very silky and fine, she has long hair around her ruff and britches, belly and a long tail. She's just turned 12 months old and she is 9.5 pounds but she is a very long cat.

I was thinking maybe something like a mainecoon x but these cats are pretty rare in Australia.

Her mother was in the pound with her and she had the same fur type but she was a black/red calico tortie.

Oh she's a sweetheart.  LOOK AT THAT TAIL!!!!

Sorry, have no idea on breed, but as you said, some breeds like Main Coon (and Norwegian Forest cat I think?) are very rare down under.

Nay, but there is always the possibility of an ships cat on an american ship coming even to Australia, fleeing or just visiting the ladies down there, alike is common with sailors around the whole world - and voilá!   We would have the genes floating down the river of the Life...

And reappearing now and then.

A GORGIOUS, yes stunning girl!   If she is enjoys people and attention, try to show her at the Cat Shows there!   Most Cat Shows I do know about has also a class for Pet cats,  HouseHold cats or similiar...

She would have good chances.   But a tip:  some grooming is wise,  in the long fur breeds, judges tends to look quite closely at the grooming.

Good luck, TS!

Could have some Turkish Angora in background. Fine silky fur? No undercoat?
When you say this, its easier to think  Turkish Angora.   We think on them as all white, but nowadays are almost all other colors allowed too...

Gemsgem showed once pics on turkish angoras, practically decently look alikes of Maine Coon...

Although Angoras are quite more rare than Maine Coon as ship cats, it is still not impossible.  We dont need dozens of them, its enough with one, sending the genes down the river of life...

Mango is GORGEOUS!!  And she certainly has a long, long tail.

I would say Angora as I thought that was what my medium length long haired cat, Toogie, was.  But his fur length was more or less consistent over his body....

Here is a picture:

This picture doesn't show it, but usually when he walked he carried his tail curled over his back like a plume.

There is no undercoat, I did think of the angora possibility too!  I will take a pic of the undercoat when she allows me to :)

I have never seen a real Turkish Angora. My cat Sweetie is a moggie, but when anyone pets him they have told me he is silky like angora. When I looked up pics online he does have some characteristics, Tail Plume, Toe Tufts, Fine boned (under all the fur) (We call ours Mr. Fluff and Stuff as he is all fur), has longer fur at the main, front legs and butt and back legs.  He does not mat like some long hair cats, but his ears are not positioned correctly. The American breeders Turkish Angora's look much different that the street cats they were derived from. Look up some pics of the Ankara Zoo.  Their cats are mostly white though.  I would love to see one in real life, but even here I think they are very rare cats.

I would love to (gently) pull Mango's tail! :D What a gorgeous girl! She looks like she's been shaved. Reminds me of a golden retriever I know who gets shaved each summer. His hair grows back shorter and a different texture on his trunk now.

Like so many others, I would say mix mane coon, however mane is usually darker in fur. I would research the coat color, long hair, and body size.

Maine Coons (named for the state of Maine) can come in a wide variety of colors. Red is definitely one of them. Obviously, there's no way to know for sure unless she was purchased from a breeder, or you have some other documentation. She is very beautiful though. That's for sure.
