Thanks for replies. I will check the exact name of the Rabies shot. The vets in Shanghai seem great (Western Vets too) but I won't be there until next year and her time for spaying will be past. So I have to risk it at this other place although I will hold off on the rabies shot until later. But the Vet in Shanghai hadn't even heard of the Purevax vacccine. Not sure why they would tell me cats have died with the Rabies shot. That makes me very suspicious. When I went there the other day, the Vet was sleeping at his desk. I had to shake him awake and he looked hung-over. He then barely looked at my kitten and seems to not like animals.

I've heard of vets here only partially spaying dogs and not doing a 'full job' of it. I'm sure they have more experience spaying/neutering dogs than cats.

Amazon is too slow with shipping and expensive. I use a Chinese website to order Wellness. That's what she eats now. But she prefers dry (Royal Canine)

Also is Revolution a one-time thing? I used one application of it last month (saw only one roundworm in stool) now there's nothing, but is one application good enough. The vet said more applications of it was unnecessary but I also heard you should deworm every month.

Okay that's what I thought. Will have to demand another tube from Vet or they will not give me another one.

I would do a second dose to ensure the worms are 100% gone. One does should be enough, but you want to make sure.

As long as she's 100% indoor you don't need to apply it monthly.  You can if you want, but it's really not needed.

If you can keep her indoors and you can control her during her heat cycle I think I'd wait till you were in Shanghai to get her spayed. I personally rather deal with a cat in heat then deal with a horrible vet botching a spay surgery. Or if she happened to have complications dealing with a vet I don't trust and have communication issues with.... I'd almost never recommend waiting to get a cat fixed, but in your situation I think it could be called for.

I'm worried about spaying as well. Is there a chance I could bypass having her spayed? There is some hormonal thing I could do but dangerous side effects I've heard.
I've never used hormonal pills on my cats but I know a few breeders who have. As far as I am aware there are no dangerous side effects with these pills that we use here in the UK. There are lots of different ones available but the one I'm more familiar with is called " Ovarid"

I heard there are two different ways it can be given, I don't know the dosages but I believe they are tiny like a quarter of pill ( but I could be completely wrong )
Either one dose once a week for so many weeks or a tiny dose at the first signs of heat for just two or three days. ;)

I thought you were having problems getting good food for her which is why I suggested amazon.
I agree with ReiKitty about waiting till you get to shanghai. A cat in heat is better than no cat at all. Please don't let your vet operate on her.

Is it even worth it or possible to spay her after a certain amount of time? By the time I'm in Shanghai, she will be over a year..maybe 13 months. She's 4 months now. Yes, I'm very worried about spaying her because I feel they won't remove everything and she will be 'half-spayed' which I've heard happens. They also said the whole procedure would take only 30 mins.

It's hard to trust hormonal things here (or even some vaccines) because there are a lot of fake products on the market (and things that can be bought online that aren't approved) so you really never know what you're getting and many of the vets outside of the big cities just aren't professional (or care)

That's fine, there is no age limit on spaying, just along as their healthy enough to survive the surgery (like a 18 year old cat I wouldn't bother spaying..)

We spay young adults allllll the time. 8 months to a couple of years. All our young mama kitties that come in with kittens. :)

The only real downside is it will take her longer to recover... and by longer I mean like two days instead of one day. I also have experienced slightly higher instances of infections in older kitties, but that's because they play with their incision more then kittens do because it bothers them more. So I usually recommend cones for older kitties.

Some people recommend waiting even till their 6 months to a year old to be fixed. You usually see them fixed at really young ages because they recover quicker and they it's easier to get tiny kittens adopted then big adults. (I prefer around 6 months myself)

The rabies shot that they use (which i will need to get if I fly on the plane from my current city to Shanghai) is the Ingelheim brand....although I'm not even sure I trust it because the Vet said 'the shot is for dogs' but for cats there is a slight risk factor (Vet has heard of cats dying from it) I thought the rabies shot for cats/dogs was basically the same. But I'm being told the rabies shot is more for dogs. It just seems suspicious. Vet in Shanghai said no cat/dog has ever died from their shots....but this Vet I'm currently seeing say's there's a small 'risk'.

Then they will not give me another revolution tube. Vet said it's good for one year and i don't need to reapply until one year from now. So unless I can find it online somehow, I'm stuck there. Although I probably did get rid of the worms.

anyway, thanks for the help!!

Anybody (human, dog, cat, ferret, etc.) can have an anaphylactic reaction to any vaccine. It's a foreign virus (killed or inactivated) after all, so the body might overreact. Maybe that vet has had cats have a reaction but no dogs so just figured it was worse for cats. If the vet knows how to treat a reaction, the patient shouldn't die. . .maybe that's why the Shanghai vets said they never lost a cat. Anyway, hold off until Shanghai for that if you can. The chance of a reaction is low but if the local vet doesn't know how to treat a reaction you don't want to risk it if you don't have to.

You might be able to get Revolution from Europe or Australia. It's called Stronghold in the UK and Australia and they don't require a prescription. I don't think you NEED to have more but it is fairly effective against fleas so it's nice to have the option.

Hi, I've been using Taobao to order the "Wellness" cat food..lol....although these imported foods are quiet expensive.

That's good you feed your cat raw meat. I've had soooo many locals here look horrified that I spend money to buy cat food from a can....I've been told "that it's unnecessary and I should just feed the cat rice. There are people here who actually raise their kittens on a daily diet of rice every day!

I live in Hefei, Anhui province, about 3 hours from Shanghai on the train. Also close to Nanjing.

LOL Im Nanjingnese!!

I know what you have been through..Anhui..Although it is a big city near shanghai and nanjing but it is quite different.

the animal protected law in China is awful and I am a law school student in Indiana University Bloomington. Nice to meet you.

If you are using weixin or QQ you could add me.

I will send you some good seller's address in taobao.

And if it is possible. I could contact my friend who own a pet store in Nanjing to send you some food.

There is a bunch of ppl in China treat cat not that good. I agree. But there are also ppl like me, when I was in Nanjing, I was willing to spend 4000 RMB for my cats per month. Cats are my life!!!

The cons : China is far away from US, if you want to buy food like wellness (brand from US) it could be very expensive.

But there are also pros, China is near Japan. Japanese love cats.(Chinese also love cats, but they love dogs more.) There are bunch of Japanese brands you can buy online. And if I could buy them in US, I will prefer Japanese cat food.

Anhui is not a province for cat lovers, no offense.

But if you go to Shanghai and Nanking I believe you will meet a lot of cat persons!!!

Another thing:

I was told by a lot of people things like: wow are you crazy spend that much on cats????

They are just stupid. Cats can not eat rice or vegetables.

I apologize for my citizens.

But I still believe they will realize that in a very close future!

Welcome to Nanjing and Shanghai! I hope I am in China right now so I could take you to visit my city!

Great! I have QQ but rarely use it. Do you have wechat? You could add me there.

Yes, I'm not impressed with the Vets in Anhui at all. Bored looking guys that look 25 that don't seem to care about animals at all. But I've talked to some really good vets in Shanghai so I have hope!I I teach at USTC and there are only  a few pet stores in the area but mostly dog food. There are also stray cats everywhere (all over the campus) and I've heard some stories of cats/dogs being skinned and boiled in this province. I just hope I can take my kitten to Shanghai with me. I will try to drive there or rent a moving van instead of the plane since some cats have died at the Vet I'm going to after the Rabies shot. And I can't take the kitten on the train/bus.

The Wellness food I order is 235RMB but most other brands I see are up to 500/600 for a case of 24 which is very high!

I love Nanjing and Shanghai so I'm looking forward to moving out of Hefei next year!

If you can take her to shanghai by train would she still need the rabies injection. I understand it's 3 hours compared to 1 hour but is it feasible?
