My cats always ate the Eagle Pack cans well. When Well Pet bought the company and revamped the line under the Holistic Select label, we went through a rocky patch but everyone decided that it was okay and kept eating it. Now they've changed the line again, going grain-free. This morning was the first time I fed the new stuff and it was universally snubbed. The smell (that food used to smell pretty good) is awful, and the texture, which used to be sort of "whipped" is now a very dense pate. That was a waste of a lot of food. Everyone was waiting for the dry to be put down. Anyone else have the same issue?

This brand is among is Malachy's favorites ...I added it to his rotation a couple months ago - I don't find the bad at all.  Yes, it is a dense pate ...I add a splash of water to it (as I do all his canned food to up his water intake) ...sorry, my kitty loves it.

Did Malachy eat it before the recipe change, or did you start it after, when they went grain-free? (Did you name him after the Roches' song Malachy's?) I know some cats will still love it, some will not, but the universal "YUCK!" I got the other morning was astonishing.

I only started feeding it a couple months ago so it was most likely the new formula ...he gobbled up some tonight - it is surprising what he turns his nose up too now since I have been feeding him wet.

He is actually named for the brother of the Irish author, Frank McCourt ...our dog is named after Frank - he had a brother named Malachy ...so hence, the cat's name lol

Great name!

There aren't a lot of wet foods my cats don't like, and Holistic Select was always my go-to. Even Marianne Faithfull, the little feral cat we're fostering, didn't want anything to do with it, and she'll eat anything! It was a real shocker.

I tried the Holistic Select when the new formulas came out. Thought it would be good to add in rotation to get price down (I feed Nature's Variety, BFF and Tiki Cat.). The cats seemed to like it; but after feeding it for a few weeks, all that were eating it developed diarrhea (not all cats were in the same household.) Not sure what the cause was; but, soon after stopping the HS, stools returned to normal. I haven't tried it again.

*It was the Chicken formula in the purple can that seemed to be the primary culprit.

Which flavor were you getting?

I just ordered a case of the Turkey pate from Chewy today.   I bought a test can of the Turkey and salmon at the pet shop which they seemed to like.

This food is actually like my last hope to find a wet food that I can use.   I have extensively searched for a food without carrageenan and no veggie fillers that comes in a 13 oz can.   I kind of max out at $32/case.   If this doesn`t work I`m not sure what to do next.   Maybe start my own petfood company and run these other clowns out of business as they seem to be clueless as to what an educated cat owner really wants.

I think I understand what carrageenan does now after opening a can of Holistic Select.   There is that jelly-like substance surrounding the pate.   I guess carrageenan keeps that gel bound into the pate so it doesnt separate out thereby making the pate denser/harder.    I am happy to deal with stirring it back in and the yuck factor rather than taking health risks with carrageenan.    But I guess companies play down to the lowest common denominator among consumers hence we have this ingredient everywhere.

I bought all three varieties that were available to me - Chicken Liver and Lamb, Salmon and Shrimp, and Ocean Fish and Tuna. Usually these all go over really well with my crowd...I've never thrown out so much cat food before.

Oh, I am going with the 2 Turkey varieties.  My test can of turkey and salmon went OK.   Keeping my fingers crossed....

BTW...  whenever I get stuck with a food my cats won`t eat I donate them to shelters or rescue organizations.   They can always make use of them  even if they are slightly past the expiration date.

OK, the Xanthan Gum might have been the culprit.  It is a substitute for carrageenan.   Read details here......  http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2013/04/15/xantham-gum.aspx

Oh dear, thank goodness I came across this thread. I tried the 13oz can too, turkey flavour pate style. My cat has a generally small appetite and dislikes most cat food brands I bought for him to test his preferences (except for Fancy Feast, he is ok with that) so he only ate about 1/3 of the can so far. No problems yet but I will have to observe and see. Was just thinking of ordering more of HS because he seems to kind of like it like he does with Fancy Feast. I will post updates if anything changes.

Hi all, I was a devoted Wellness fan until I recently read about many of their foods (wet & dry) causing urinary crystal issues for cats - even females. I got so scared that I returned pretty much all my wellness tins and haven't slept properly all night, trying to find a substitute. I found Holistic Select and would like to know if it's free from the urinary tract problems that Wellness has been associated with. They are also both owned by the same company so that concerns me. Just a bit of background, I feed wet & dry about 50/50 plus some raw meat throughout the week, planning to reduce the kibble from 6 meals down to 3. Have also considered a barf diet supplemented with canned but not 100% sure about logistics or digestive balancing. Thank you again cat lovers
