My sister's daughter wants a pet. She is allergic to cats, and the dog they have isn't very playful.

What do you think would be a good first pet for an 8 year old?

My sister used to have a couple of dwarf rabbits when we were kids. They were so sweet, they were house trained and they'd let us pick them up and cuddle them.

Just make sure you don't keep a male and female together. They breed like......well, rabbits.

Rats!! I had rats growing up and they are smart, clean, can be taught tricks, learn their names, and unlike most other small animals, they form bonds with humans and are interested in interacting with them. Rats are very sociable animals, and snuggling and mutual grooming is very important, so you should always have at least two rats living together.

Here's a cute list about why rats make great pets!

Rats are awesome . They make fabulous pets .  I had them years ago .. Would have them now but with 3 Terriers  & 2 Cats that love to catch and kill mice that get in the house , Not a good idea ..

My happy place.
Definitely rats! We had two years ago. They were such sweet little things, they used to love curling up on our shoulder and having their head scratched.

Another vote for rats, provided males and females are kept separate. They're clean (can even be taught to only eliminate in their cage), smart enough to learn tricks, and cuddly.

The main disadvantage is their short life spans.

All I can think of is a pet fish, a pet hamster, a pet mouse, or maybe a rabbit or something. But first, how good with pets is she?
