noticed new vinegar smell to kitty's poop but no diarrhea

I noticed an odd smell to kitty's poop. It smelled like vinegar but was firm. Any ideas?

ANY change in food--even if within the same brand/flavor, if it is marked "new and improved"? That's the usual culprit.

Nope. Same kind as usual and I just checked the bag but there's nothing about changes to the formula.

How old is the cat? When did this start?  Color of stool is normal? Good tootsie rolls in shape, decently firm?  Does the cat go outside?

About 5 years old, he's outside occasionally but only with supervision. This started within the last week. Stool is lighter colored than usual but consistency is normal and I don't see anything funny looking in it.

How's he doing? The smell and color suggests it could be the early start to a parasite, but hard to say.....

He's not showing any sign of discomfort and his activity level is normal. No loss of appetite.
