Does anyone have suggestions for medicating a finicky cat? My cat has to take oral steroids, 2mg a day, which I had a "special formula" made that supposedly hid the taste of the med. I also have to give him a Leukeran tablet 2x's a week. At this point Im taking him to his vet for the Leukeran dosing (my vet has said he's one of the most difficult cats he's ever had to medicate, examine, et.). So for now the Leukeran is covered (eventually Id like to start dosing him myself if I can figure out a way)... but in any case, he wont eat the steroids mixed with food. Ive experimented with the "tastiest" of foods from my local pet store... he will gobble the food up without meds, but once I put even 1mg (he needs 2mg a day) in any food he won't touch it. If I try to administer by holding him by his scruff, wrapped in a towel, with a friend, et., he fights so hard, then drools the meds out and usually pukes.

He loves those frozen pinky mice and even those he wont touch if there's a drop of medicine on there!

Its a frustrating ordeal bc he has small cell lymphoma -but he responds so well to the steroid shots, and hopefully Leukeran too (in time), it's like his clock is ticking, and unless Im able to regularly medicate him his time, health, and quality of life will be shortened. Ive watched Youtube videos but his lymphoma is kind of in his nasal passage and also near his eye -so the one technique where you kind of open the mouth from above isn't an option bc it may hirt his eye or nose.

Thanks to you all for your time. He's healthy now, and loving life. He's got so much fight and is very strong -I just need to keep him that way -but ironically, the meds I need to give him to keep him healthy enable him to maintain resistance & strength, preventing the care he obviously needs! Thanks again!

Have you tried coating the pills in cheese, yogurt, or ice cream? Maybe vanilla pudding? I have a very stubborn, strong and aggressive cat and had to give him pills before. The proper way to give them a pill is to sit behind them while they are sitting on the floor, with one arm, keep him from moving forward, and with the other hand, use your pinky finger and stick it in the side of his mouth so it stays open, then toss the pill back in his throat, as he pushed back into you, close his mouth and run his throat till he swallows.

If I do this any other way with my cat, I end up with scars. lol

Thank you KCK!   My guy can't be medicated by just one person.  I've tried everything.  I tried the way you suggested but he's just too strong (which again, is a good thing).  The yogurt suggestion was a good one however, with respect to his oral steroids!  In addition to being a heavyweight (muscle, not so much chubby), he also wouldn't eat his formulated steroids (supposedly, formulated to taste good).  He would pick at the wet food whenever I'd put the oral steroids in... when I tried yogurt (and Kefir), he lapped them up!   :)
