Cat not eating

My cat, Zoey stopped eating on Wednesday.  It was kind of sudden, she was perfectly normal when I went to bed Tuesday.  But she was strange on Wednesday.  She was excited for her food like usual but then took 2 bites and then left.  Then all day didn't want anything to do with food and just slept in weird areas.  Then Wed night she threw up a small hairball with a little bit of pink.

Thursday morning she seemed a bit happier so I offered her food and she didn't even have any and walked away.  So I called the vet and brought her in.  They kind of waved it off thinking it was nothing.  Gave her Reglan and B12 and some fluids and told me that they would call me on Friday to see how she was.  Told me to give her an appetite stimulant that night if she hadn't eaten by then.  I gave her one along with a pepcid around 8pm.  She came to me hungry but again didn't want food.  She would gag just at the smell of food.  I feel like maybe she has a hairball she needs to get out.

So Friday I called and said she hadn't had any food since I left them.  I brought her back in and they did an xray.  They didn't find anything out of the ordinary.  They gave her some hairball stuff and more fluids and sent her back home with me.  I gave her another appetite stimulant although I felt maybe I shouldn't.  Now she is walking about making this mushing noise with her mouth and throwing up foam.  She seems otherwise happy but just uncomfortable.  I don't understand what is wrong and I am just getting upset which I know isn't helping.

I have had plenty of sick cats and I understand nausea related illnesses.  The vet assured me it isn't any of those things.  I know vets can be very incompetent as well.  I had 3 cats die last year and I am just having a really hard time with this.  They told me to force feed her but there is no way I am doing that while she is walking around like this.  I don't even know what else the vet can do.  She said if she doesn't eat today the next thing she will do is an ultrasound and I am fairly certain she will find nothing on that as well.  And I do not have the money for that.  I have already spent $300 finding out absolutely nothing and I don't want to spend more finding out more nothing.  But she needs to eat.

Also she had bloodwork a couple of months ago and everything was normal. She is 1 and a half if that helps anything.  Long hair.  She eats low carb canned food.  She and her sister ate the exact same food on Tuesday.  Her sister is fine.

I am sorry your kitty is so sick and I hate it when the vets seem so blase about what might be wrong. Have you tried plain meat flavored baby food (e.g., without onion) and I realize you don't want to force feed her, but from what I understand, getting water into her is critical.  Is she peeing and pooping?

Anyway, do you think there could be some type of poison around the house?  I know I'm constantly worrying that someone will drop an aspirin or ibuprophen and one of the cats will eat it.   And one of mine ate dental floss last year that she got out of the garbage that could have done her in if she didn't throw it up.  She also swallowed a cat toy (the most popular one on Amazon go cat mouse toy - don't buy it everyone) that made her extremely sick.  Even though I was playing with her when that happened, after that I put all the cat toys away and now check them for loose parts before play time.

I offered her turkey baby food this afternoon and she immediately vomited.  I offered her plain regular chicken last night and she didn't want it.  Today I tried AD food and she gagged.  She just went poop and it was mostly diarrhea.  Not liquid diarrhea but it mostly fell apart when I tried to pick it up to flush it.  I wonder if that will make her feel a bit better.

I use floss threaders so it's not floss.  I don't leave any string around where they can get it.  All the toys I leave out are not small enough to swallow.  Their favorite toys are water bottle lids as weird as it sounds.  I block off all the cabinets with 12 packs of soda so they can't get into anything.  She did have some deli ham on Tuesday night but her sister ate it too so I don't think that is what made her sick.  I am considering giving her a Zofran with her next pill dose.  I have them with my pill stash.

See if she will eat pumpkin to stop the diarrhea. Get canned pumpkin, the kind you use for pies (with no sugar added).

She may just have a stomach bug. Make sure she is drinking. If she isn't, use a small syringe and mix unflavored pedalyte with water (50/50) and shoot it in her throat slowly. That will keep her from becoming dehydrated.

Well it's good that she's pooping right, that indicates she's not blocked.  Is there a reason you are set on giving her the zofran?  See below:

Zofran

  • Medication should never be administered without first consulting your veterinarian.
  • Doses of may vary widely depending on the reason for prescribing.
  • The duration of administration depends on the condition being treated, response to the medication and the development of any adverse effects.
  • In dogs, the usual dose is 0.05 to 0.5 mg per pound (0.1 to 1.0 mg/kg) orally every 12 to 24 hours. The intravenous dose is 0.05 to 0.1 mg per pound (0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg).
  • In cats, the usual dose is 0.11 mg per pound (0.22 mg/kg) every 8 to 12 hours.

Plus if she gets sicker you won't be sure if it's the meds or something else.

I've had good success with the pumpkin (not the pie filling) too.  Though as you shared, getting her to eat anything has really been a challenge.

She won't eat pumpkin.  Zoey hates treats and the like.  She had to be syringed the hairball paste.  She won't eat stuff like that willingly even when she is normal.  I just saw her eat a few bites of dry food about an hour ago.  Hopefully she keeps it down.  I noticed with another cat of mine who was nauseated with pancreatitis, he couldn't handle wet food but dry food was ok.  So I won't offer her anything smelly so she keeps that in her stomach.

I mention the Zofran because it is the most effective in terms of nausea.  That site you listed says it is for vomiting but it is for nausea.  I have been a member of many cat groups and it is the drug of choice for nausea.  It was extremely helpful for my cat that had pancreatitis and my cat that had hyperthyroid.  Vets always try to push Cerenia as a nausea drug but it doesn't help with nausea.  Cerenia is for vomiting.  And besides I don't want to stop her from vomiting.  I am not sure she will actually need it though.
