Rick's mom is on our cell phone plan; she's been on it for many years now. We just pay the bill for her; she doesn't have to worry about it. She can just use her phone and it's fine. She has an old clam-shell phone, not a smart phone (we are not going with a smart phone for her as she wouldn't use it). But she's had the same phone now for a very long time.

I keep track of our cell phone usage from month to month, data info, cell phone minutes, text minutes, etc. I have always done so. I like to know where we're at and how we're doing with minutes and such.

She's lucky to use 5 minutes of call minutes a month. She calls her daughter sometimes, but not often. When she needs to talk to us, she uses her house phone (despite us pleading with her to use her cell). Most of the time, she'll just call me at work if she needs me because it costs nothing that way. I think that maybe she's worried that she'll use a bunch of minutes, but honestly, it's fine. She could spend time on her phone every week and we wouldn't go through minutes.

The bottom line is that we are wasting money by including her in the plan. Rick asked me if I thought we'd be better off just getting her something like a Trac Phone and buying her minutes; those minutes would easily last her a very long time. And it might be cheaper in the long run. She still would not have to pay anything; we would take care of it all for her.  I'm wondering, too, that maybe a Trac Phone might be better because it might be a little larger than her old clam shell phone. I am wondering if part of the reason she doesn't use her clam-shell is because maybe the numbers and buttons are harder to see or if she just doesn't think about it. She basically wants a phone in case she's out and about and she falls or she's in an accident, something like that. Like for emergencies. Keep in mind that she is in her 90s now.

What do you think? Any opinions? Trac Phone (or similar) for Rick's mom or keep her cell phone?

My happy place.
My mother has a pay as you go mobile phone, is that what you call a Trac phone?
She hardly uses hers either and its so much cheaper for her to just top up with the minimum rather than being on a contract.
Your MIL might be better off with a mobile like this: Not sure what is available where you are but this is similar to the one my mum has. She finds it really easy to use. Hope this helps.

Hi.  I'm not familiar with the TRAC phone, however, I noticed you mentioned that your mother-in-law has had the phone for a very long time, so for that reason it might be good to look into replacing it with a newer model.  The reason I mention this is because I knew someone who also had a phone for emergencies only,  and had the same phone for many years (and rarely used it), and when their car suddenly stopped in the middle of the road one day, the cell phone wouldn't work.

However, I would also consider a prepaid or pay-as-you-go plan, if it would save you on the monthly costs.

BTW, it's quite wonderful that she is in her 90's and still gets "out and about".

I. Suggest you investigate 2 options:

1. Jitterbug offers a large button phone for seniors. The basic plan is $14.99 per month, which gives. 50 free minutes. No contract, no cancelation fees. The $24.99 plan allows caregiver updates, calls to doctors, and other features.

2. Verizon offers a prepaid which is what I have, as I only use it for emergencies. $100 per year, and you set it up to automatically renew onto your credit card so you don't have to remember. I think it is 20 hours per year,, not sure as I only use it to call AÀA when I get a flat (I seem to find every nail on the road!). The hours are not lost, I currently have 38 hours on mine.

I have an ancient cell phone that I hardly ever use (bought before flip phones came out). I've been told not to get rid of it until it totally dies because it was/is a good one and they last forever. I don't need all the gizmos and gadgets that come on newer phones. I've had to change the battery once because each time you recharge, there's residual garbage that eventually takes out the battery. At some point, like with computers, I'm sure the company will force me into a new phone, by making service to "old faithful" obsolete.

I also do pay-as-you-go. I put $100 on it, and it usually lasts the year. You can put smaller amounts of money on the phone, but that money expires in 1 month or 2 months depending on the plan. You don't get it back. The company keeps it. The $100 plan doesn't expire for a year. Check expiry dates if you decide on a pay-as-you-go plan.

We use a TRAC phone and buy minutes as we need them.  My boss was telling me that his MIL has AARP and got a phone through them for $15.00 a month.  She is blind, so I don't know if it was something special to make things easier for her or if this is available to all AARP members.  I like the thought of a Jitterbug, too, just because of the big buttons.  I'm not a senior but that phone really appeals to me.

Thank you for your opinions. We're going to talk to her about it today. We'll probably take her shopping with us for the phone; she's the one who's going to have to use it. I am interested in the Jitterbug for her and also in a pay-as-you-go plan and yes, we will check out expiration dates for the minutes. Thanks, Cocheezie, for the heads-up about that. I think his mom does have AARP (I know we do now).

DH has a trac phone.  Be aware that you still have to put so many minutes on it per month (I don't remember how much, because I bought him a 1 year plan).  However, if she doesn't use it, it's going to be wasting money anyway. DH previously had Virgin Mobile, and we had to put $15 every 3 months.  Doesn't sound like a lot, but he never used it and it had accumulated almost $200 that we ended up wasting because I didn't want to keep putting $15 into it.  I tried to use it down, but talked to my sister for a very long time and barely made a dent.

It depends on how much extra it costs to have your MIL on your plan, whether or not it would be mores cost effective.

Pam I have had a pay by the minute cell phone for a number of years now, don't know if that is what a trac phone is.  When I first got it, you need to buy minutes at least every 3 months whether you needed them or not, there is never a contract unless you want one.  After a full year with T-Mobile which is what I use, I don't have buy any minutes now for a full year unless I run out of them.

I am like Rick's mom, I only use my phone in an emergency and it  is turned off in my purse most of the time.  When I have to meet Russell or my sister somewhere, I always make sure it's on in case something comes up.

I had to leave Verizon because for me, it was just to expensive.  I hated having to count minutes and not using the cell all that much.  This might be a good idea for her and T-Mobile has a lot of nice phones altho mine is a Samsung.

When I went to T-Mobile I bought a package which included the phone, their brand and some minutes to go with it.  I cost me like $25.00.  When the phone wasn't working properly any longer, I bought the Samsung.  I am very happy with T-Mobile and will stay with them.

This is just a suggestion.

I think it is the phones themselves for the older people.  My mom is in her 80's, when she is out I try to call her cell to find her. She calls me back when she gets home on her land line.  I tell her I was trying to call her cell and she tells me she left it at home
. If she had a giant phone like the first cell phones that came out she might use it. My dad is 90 and he will talk to someone on mine, but he just looks at it like it is something from the Jetson's. I let him Skype with my daughter who is away at college and that really through him for a loop.

I recommend Great Call Splash. My grams is 85 and we had a Jitterbug for her for years. It was simple, but she only used it a couple of times. She also had a medic alert button at home in case of falls, it went through a landline and could be worn in shower. First we replaced the Jitterbug with the earlier version of the Splash that was not waterproof, but easier than a cell phone. When they came out with the waterproof Splash we were able to cancel the $$ med alert button too. The Splash is just a one button speaker phone that calls an operator who can connect her with family, tow, nurse, 911, etc. The great thing is the gps so you can see where she is at anytime on the website or app, and see when she left the house and came back up to a week back. It also shows battery level so you can see if she is charging it. You can send a locate tone to it too I think. The app can send auto notifications to you too, but my grams is so active, that got annoying! You can store info about contacts, medical, car, doctor, etc. online that operator can access when assisting her. It is pager sized and can go on necklace, wrist, lanyard, or belt clip. Same company and cell network as Jitterbug.

Hope I am not too late to offer some information.

I'm a low usage person, and I just got a phone with www.ting.com. With their plan you buy the phone outright and then get charged a service fee and only for what you use within certain usage ranges for talk, text, and data. For example, if I make only 5 minutes worth of phone calls a month and don't text or use data, the bill will be $6+$3=$12 total. If you talk more than 100 minutes than you move into the next price range at $9 for the month. Talk, text, and data are a la carte, so if you use up to 100 meg of data for the month, that's another $3. Good for low usage people. Network is Sprint, 3G or 4G depending on the phone you select.

Another budget plan is Page Plus cellular. They are on the Verizon network, so good coverage, but I believe it is 3G. Can go as low as $12/mo. Selection of phones is minimal, but it doesn't sound like she's going to be picky.

I haven't looked into them too much, but Consumer Cellular is supposed to market towards seniors.

Here is a good article that covers even more budget phone plans:

Consumer cellular got great ratings for customer service from consumer reports. They give discounts thru aarp. I think they use the att network which is ok but not great.
