Life isn't the same without a cat,I only made it a week after she died and had to get another cat(it didn't replace her but it did help my pain-22 years is a long time).I now have a savannah-manx-and a Bengal plus I care for 3 strays.1 stray lives on my porch in a house I built and he is not in good shape. All the cats in and outside the house still don't replace my girl I lost but you have to keep on and when your ready find a cat that needs your love and care.Once again Im so sorry for your loss.

Oh gosh I'm so sorry - neutering is the simplest operation in veterinary medicine.  So that being the case, did they give you an explanation, because being fearful doesn't explain why he would have passed from the operation.

breebree, I'm so sorry to hear this. I really don't think stress can have been the reason you lost Kody. I've had lots of feral cats neutered and spayed, some of these had never been handled by humans before and were understandably terrified, but they all survived surgery.

It could have been a bad reaction to the anaesthetic or it could have been a heart problem. I think you need to talk to your vet and find out exactly what happened, they owe you an explanation.

Please don't blame yourself, you didn't do anything wrong.

I am sorry for your loss. I agree with Noracha. There was likely an underlining issues and being put under for surgery aggravated it  :(

Bree I think most people will tell you that they have feelings of dread any time they drop their kittens off to be spayed or neutered.   So your feelings before the surgery were normal and not some signal you should have listened to and didn't.   Please don't blame yourself, you did the right thing.  Kody knows he was loved while he was with you here and he still knows.  Again I'm very sorry for your loss.

Very sorry to hear you lost your boy. Just so tragic and hard to understand.

My best guess would be, after they start to wake up from the anesthesia, occasionally a cat will do what we call crash. They stop breathing and need to be quickly resuscitated.

It only takes a minute of not noticing he stopped breathing for them to lose him.

They certainly owe you some sort of an explanation though, to be flippant like "these things happen" and disregard your loss and devastation is cruel and so unfair to you.

Makes me wonder if they know that someone wasn't watching him come out of his sleep. Ran to the bathroom, etc. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

Back when I was working the monthly feral clinic, we would spay/neuter about 100 cats in one day. There was usually at least one time each clinic we would hear someone yell "crash!" The signal that a cat has stopped breathing and was quickly rushed back into the surgery area for reviving.

There were several volunteers who's job was solely to watch their breathing until they were fully awake.

Otherwise I can't see how a cat would die from a simple neuter. VERY simple procedure.

As for a heart condition, very likely if there was a bad enough defect/murmur, it would have been clearly heard before administering anesthesia.

In my opinion it's doubtful it would be the shots given.

You will likely never know exactly what happened, but just know there was no suffering involved, likely happened while he was still asleep or close to it at least.

Very sorry.

I'm very sorry for your loss :( Stress shouldn't be a reason to die, and every surgery has a risk. But you don't expect a cuty like him to die this suddenly. Stay strong, I hope you'll be able to put your anger aside and just remember him as the lovely pet that he was. He deserves no more <3

Breebree- I am so sorry about Kody. I a not a dr. but it sounds like Kody might have had an underlying heart condition. These are not always caught before surgery. I happens to people too.You did all you could please don't beat yourself up.

It's possible he had some kind of allergy to whatever they gave him and were unaware. It's hard to tell what cats are allergic to without doing a lot of tests that causes stress on them as it is.
