My recent rescue, Sonny, had very bad flea and parasite infestations and was on Pancour, Metronidazole, and Drontal. He's had two doses of Frontline, mostly recently two weeks ago. He has become increasingly itchy and scratchy and whiney.  I keep combing him with a flea comb and see no live fleas. I just took a picture of some fur I combed that contains black specks--can you guys tell me what these are? Are they flea dander, or some kind of mites? I'm trying to avoid another expensive vet bill (though of course I will take him if the itching doesn't settle down soon).

It might be flaky skin - if he's itching, he may just have dry skin (or maybe a reaction to some of the medications?)  I would take him to the vet if it continues - especially if he continues to scratch.

Poor guy - sometimes its one thing after another!

But what are those black specks? BTW this is some cat hair I put on my bathroom sink to take a picture of it, it"s not a pic of his back

If it is flea dirt, it will turn a reddish color if you add water to it (because of all the blood they drink).

I was going to say what Catwoman said "flea dirt looks like pepper".  I have an all white dog and she had fleas once.  When I pushed her hair out of the way, I could see sprinklings of what looked like pepper.  It was at the base of her back and where she was scratching.

Shadow and Stellar have dry skin and there's looks like dandruff.  It's only when it's cold outside.  It helps if I brush them.  By spring each year it is gone.

Hopefully you can figure it out.

I combed a live flea off of him last night, so I guess my question is answered. Frontline hasn't worked for him, so I'll have to try another flea medication in a week or so. I'm just relieved it's nothing more serious than fleas! I'm giving him salmon oil, too, for the omega 3 acids. This poor little guy has been through so much!

I put my cat on Revolution. Frontline was beyond ineffective--it was like it made them multiply!
