Hello Everyone,

I was curious if anyone has tried the new blend from Orijen; Regional Red.

I want to switch my one year old's diet from Blue Buffalo Rocky Mountain Red Meat to something similar. I've searched high and low for a food company that uses reliable sources in their products and after digging around, I seem to have finally found a great brand. Although, I first tried the Six Fish blend and was only successful for about a quarter of the bag. I mixed a bit of it with the current bag of Blue that I had and she immediately dove into the bowl and ate vigerosuly. She seemed to love the flavor. Last week she stopped eating the kibbles of Orijen and I haven witnessed her spit each Orijen kibble out and eat the soft morsels of Fresh Pet Select that I add to her meals. I'm wondering if that flavor of Six Fish is just growing on her perhaps? I'm just confused on why she suddenly stopped eating the Orijen. So, I wanted some input on the Regional Red Blend if anyone has tried it yet, Is it as smelly as the Six Fish? (For some odd reason I Loved the way it smelled.... crazy me)

I assume it's similar to their dog food Regional Red? Which I do know many folks who like the dog stuff. I don't feed Orijen personally and especially wouldn't feed their fish formula because it's over priced byproducts still as far as I know. (Aside from that, I don't like feeding too much fish in any brand) But I do believe their other meats come from a better source. Worth a shot if it's within your budget though.

As for her not liking it all of a sudden, are you buying big bags of food? How long does it take for you to get through the food? It may be going stale if you're only feeding one cat and shooting for more economical large bags. My cats get a variety of food to also keep them interested. I swap up kibble pretty much each new bag and canned food is different each meal. (I normally keep 15+ flavors from different brands on hand) No pickiness!

Hi Alyssia,

I have been feeding my cat Orijen Regional Red Blend for the last year and she loves it. She also likes the Chicken one. I only give her a very small amount as she gets wet food as well and I want to get her off the dry food if I can.

Hello CHWx

I'm educating myself on proper cat nutrition. Previously with my late cat, I'd fed them the frowned upon brands like Kat n Kaboodle and such. As for the fish aspect, I feel vary wary of feeding my cat too much fish after reading up on how  the mercury content in such foods can cause problems. I'll stick with poultry meats and red meats.

As for the bag purchased, it was a five pound bag. I bought it the 17th of November, so a good two weeks ago. The funny thing is, I work at a kennel/vet and I brought her to work with me to get her vaccinations and since it was going to be a long day I brought her some breakfast. Ever since that day she has not seemed interested in the Orijen kibble. She of coarse was NOT Happy that day, but I highly doubt that could have thrown off her appetite for the kibble.

Thank you for your input!

I want to try the Regional Red considering she LOVED the Red Meat Blue Wilderness. Maybe she's just not a fish kitty... :)

I give about 1/3 Cup dry kibble and 1/2 cup wet through out the day. What do you think about the Fresh Pet Select Roasted Morsels?

I haven't seen Regional Red in my local stores. I'm currently trying a bag of dry Cat and Kitten. My cat likes it about the same as NVI chicken. He'll eat it, but he's been begging for treats a lot more. The only thing I've notice about Orijen Cat and Kitten is that it seems to make my cat a bit gassy.

Research is a good thing for sure, even if it may make us crazy at times. ;) My cats are personally poultry fanatics. That and pork. Lol!

Cats can be horribly finicky though and they can indeed associate bad experiences with certain things. For instance, a cat who has a urinary issue may try to wee in the box. The cat ends up feeling pain trying to pee in the box so your rug or couch becomes the target for his urination because the cat now sees the litter box as a source of pain. So I wouldn't be too overly surprised if that may have been the case with the vet and the food.

I hope you can figure it out! Maybe freeze the remaining Orijen 6 Fish (To keep it fresh) and try the Regional Red or for now stick with the Wilderness that you know she likes. Reintroduce the 6 Fish slowly in a few weeks to see if she takes to it any better then.

People I know think I'm overly obsessed with the research I am doing. Least I know my baby will be as healthy as I can manage.

So I ended up purchasing a bag of Regional Red and, success! She at her while bowl, kibble and wet alike. I set out some dry kibble alone for her to snack on through out the night and in the morning the bowl was empty. So, aha! She's not a fishy kitty. :)

Here's more information to consider in your research.

Thank you very much for the link!

I'm lucky to have a cat who hydrates herself  quite often. She gets wet food daily and drinks like a horse! I had her 2nd exam done a week ago and according to the vet she is a perfectly healthy girl!

She's pretty small. At One and Five months she weighs a whole 6.5 pounds and eats all of her food (Now that I resolved the 6 fish ordeal. ) through out the day. I feed her about 1/3 cup dry and 1/2 cup wet daily and she is very active. I'm pleased to receive as much insight and information on cat nutrition to give my little girl a wonderful and long life.
