I am just wondering if a cat's water intake can be (almost) completely filled if fed only canned food.

Not for my cats. I feed wet food only, but I add water to canned food.

This is an excerpt of an article here on TCS called "Tips to Increase your Cat's Water Intake. " I can't post the link. So according to this, yes. Canned food does have enough water, but my 1 cat has had several urinary blockages, so I always add several tablespoons of water into his wet as insurance. Now that he eats only wet, he very rarely drinks from his pet fountain.

"How Much Water Is Enough?

According to the Nutrition Research Council's "Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats", (on which AAFCO nutrient requirements are based), a cat can maintain a hydrated state as long as the moisture level of the food meets or exceeds 63%, as fed.

The moisture content of cat foods varies dramatically:
Moisture Content (as fed)
  Dry Food
6 – 10%
  Canned Food
65% - 75%
  Raw Food
70% - 75%
If you are feeding canned or raw food with no dry food, your cat is consuming plenty of water."

I am glad to see this topic. I was wondering the same. My cat gets wet and dry food daily. He eats a can of cat food every day. But I NEVER see him drink from his bowl. EVER. He doesnt' drink out of the sink, tub, shower or toilet. I got a fountain and he ignored it. I do add water to his wet food a lot of times but not always. He pees plenty in the box.

If your cat were eating 100% canned, then all is good. But since he's getting a mix of dry and wet, he may or may not be getting enough. I had several tablespoons of water into my cats wet food to supplement his water intake. I started with 1 tsp and increased gradually. He doesn't seem to mind it!

Almost but not quite
Always always have a bowl or fountain of fresh water available at all times regardless of the type of diet you feed, whether you add extra water to the canned food, or whether you ever see your cat drinking from it or not.
