My cat was very lethargic over the weekend and stopped eating. He was drinking a little water though. I took him to the vet and they have kept him in since Monday. Apart from being lethargic and not eating he had a high temperature, was dehydrated, had lost weight, and his eyes were inflammed and weepy. They put him on a drip to rehydrate him and did blood tests which showed extremely low red and white blood cell counts but no sign of any viruses. They then took a bone marrow sample and that has been sent off for testing, have to wait 2 more days for the results. He now has a low body temperature which they are concerned about. I have only had him for 10 weeks as I adopted him from Cats Protection, he is 8 years old and was obviously well looked after by his previous owner, being fully vaccinated, wormed, de-flead and microchipped by them. I am so worrried about him.

I don't have any advice but just wanted to send some vibes that he makes a quick recovery and that it's nothing too serious. :vibes::vibes::vibes:
We got our fur babies from the cats protection, a wonderful organization.

Welcome to TCS :wavey:

I know, it doesn't take long for these babies to etch their paw prints onto your heart. :heart4:
It sounds like he is being well looked after at the vets and they are being very thorough with their testing. Hopefully they will have some answers for you soon.

I'm hoping to hear of improvement!

He is still staying at the vets and is on a drip. He hasn't eaten anything yet and another blood test has shown no improvement in his red and white blood cell counts. But they started giving him steroids and they say he looks a little brighter. He is a fighter cos they said he is quite feisty, so that is a good sign. Fingers crossed the bone marrow test results give some answers and it isn't really serious.

I will be thinking of you and your little one. I do hope things work out. I know how it feels to have one in the hospital, especially not knowing what is wrong or how to fix it.

I'm at a complete loss! I have an 8 + month old Maine coon looking kitten who is very ill. I took him to the vet on Monday for tests and he is not positive for Feline Leukemia, nor FIP. Nevertheless, he is a sick baby. He only weighs 5 pounds max, and doesn't eat much at all. He does drink water. He was running a fever when seen, and likely still is. I don't know what to do anymore! He just lays under my bed with outing for the litter box and water. He is pretty wobbled when he does walk. I am so afraid he's just going to lie there and die! Please anyone: options, suggestions, help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to lose him.

I would take him straight back to see your vet. They may be other tests they can do. You could phone them up for advice. Just make sure you give them all the details of his symptoms and tell them how worried you are. I hope he gets better soon x

Hi everyone,
Here's an update on Rascal:
Back to the Vet this morning! After every test known to man, plus X-Rays, they've determined that his colon is impacted with hard feces! This apparently is a very dangerous thing, as it can and does begin to rot, abscess, and make them very, very sick. They are keeping him overnight and he gets an enema, injections, and fluids and food via tubes.
This is not one I had thought of! The Doc is being very thorough, thank god. I had thought I was about to lose him, but hopefully it will turn out fine. Poor little guy, no wonder he hurt so bad. Warning to everyone out there---this might be the last thing you'd think of, but it's not that uncommon. And it can be fatal if not addressed. I'm praying this will fix him up, but will have to keep him away from the dry food for now.

Not good news from the vet today. Mickeys blood cell counts have only improved very slightly, much less than the vet expected. I was asked if I wanted him put to sleep today or hang on until sunday for one more blood test. I obviously opted for the 2nd choice. I am going to visit him tomorrow and I know it will probably be the last time I will see him. Im devastated

Oh God Celia, I am so very sorry! I received the same news today myself about my baby Rascal. He evidently has Feline Infectious Peritonitis! No treatments, no cure. Worse he can infect my other cats. The fluids and force feeding helped his condition a little, but briefly. And I feel that it's cruel to have to force-feed him when he's already suffering. I hate this!!!! It makes me so angry that the vet ruled it out initially, until I forced him into keeping him long enough to give him help, and maybe make him better. $800 later we're back at square one. Right now all I can do is hold and love him until it's time, but it just breaks me into little pieces. I know you must feel the same. God bless them both, and prayers to you too.

Celia, I just posted about mine being in the hospital, too, and I fear I must make that decision, too. He is a lovey orange-and-white boy just like yours. Both our hearts are breaking.

The vet called early this morning. Mickey had a bad night and was struggling to breathe. A chest xray showed no problems. He was suffering too much so when asked I gave them permission to put him to sleep :(

As a new member, I came here looking for advice and experience from fellow cat people (based on a specific ailment affecting my cat). But after reading your posts, I remembered the terrible suddenness of a sick pet; the frantic posts that you read and/or write while waiting for answers. The complete trust (and distrust) of veterinarians that you develop when you're being told that your cat may (or may not) live. I'm so sorry about Mickey, and any other buddies who I didn't see on this post.

Rascal?
