Balki has had chronic eye infections since he was a tiny kitten. He is 10 months old now. Medicines don't work. He goes in and out of the infections, usually kicking it on his own.

Of course the vet is highly suspicious of herpies & did a viral absorption test yesterday.

I'm interested to hear people's experiences in daily treatment to supress herpies & what drugs your currently using? Also, what are you using to to keep your cat's face clear of discharge when he/she is having a flare up?

My vet started him on 250mg of Lysine twice daily to start. He has been taking this since the weekend. Today, I have to pick up some Interferon liquid from a specialty pharmacy. I'm to give .2mls of that as well. If that doesn't work to supress it, then I will have to put the Interferon in the eyes as well as orally & start him on anti-viral eye drops. But, I'm just going to start on the oral meds first, as I've heard that the anti-viral eye drops can be a painful experience. Since this is going to be a life long struggle, I don't want him to have use the painful drops if possible.

Luckily, Balki is obsessed w/ food & I can easily hide the meds in wet food by crushing the tablet into a fine powder.

There is a wealth of info on feline herpes treatments and alternatives at this site: Feline Herpes Virus

Also, you can join this Yahoo group on the same topic:

Yahoo Group - Feline Herpes

Nakita was just diagnosed with the herpes virus two weeks ago. So I am new to the topic. I have to go for another appointment soon to discuss alternatives since Nakita hasn't shown any obvious signs of herpes (ie: inflammed eye/discharge)and was only diagnosed through a blood test. My vet did recommend to start Interferon when/if an outbreak does occur and to start giving daily doses of Lysine.

If you have any other questions, feel free to send me a private message!

Thanks for the link.

I just wanted to get an idea of what the standard protocol for treatment was & if what my vet prescribed was best & safe.
