I just rescued a kitten from my friends backyard...the majority of the cats were very feral ...I guessimate he is about 6 weeks old by his teeth...he was VERY malnourished. I am concerned because he doesn't appear to have any energy and doesn't want to play. He sleeps all the time...should I be worried about the no energy or is he just adjusting to regular food and attention??

Kitten needs to go to the vet and soon! Being malnourished and lethargic are not things to play around with. Plus, he needs to be dewormed and combo tested anyway.

Agree with CatPack, an asap vet visit to a good vet is in order if you want to play it safe.

If you dont afford or are willing to gamble - how is it, does he seems tame, want to pet etc?  Or is he ferale he too, but somewhat more docile than the others?

In one variation, if he is totally tame: it is common when they get in from hardships into a safe haven, they do take out their accumulated needs of rest.

If he is ferale like his littermates, but just somewhat more docile, it is fully possible he sleeps because of the stress and exhaustion.   He of course wont play as yet, as long as he is stressed and afraid.

What do you use as "regular food" for him?   Being about 6 weeks (he may be somewhat more - undernourished homeless kittens tend to be older than people think at first glance), and prob having mom, he isnt much used to food.   So, be careful what you are giving him! - How used with small kittens are you?

Anyway, think: he is just a baby, and must have food suitable for babies...

Also, small portions, but often - just because he is starved.

If you can get hold on goat milk, fresh or bottled (full fat), it is good and safe, as supplement, or even main source of food.

Ps.  These tips applies also if you do the optimal, and take him to a good vet.

Not taking him to a vet is a gamble - he may be seriously sick, and the malnoutrishemnt and his sleepiness symptoms...

Continue to report and ask.

 Good luck!

He is a very loving little guy...always in my lap, next to me, or near by. Feeding him kitten chow and Iams to promote good health. His eyes are getting less sickly looking and his coat seems to appear less mangey looking and is becoming softer. I'm use to kittens being playful and into everything like a toddler! Thank you for responding and I will try to get him to a vet as soon as I can
