We took Rick's truck into the garage for some work.

Turns out that the truck will need tires to pass inspection in January.

Took my car in for inspection this afternoon. They called tonight. The Tucson needs new tires (it has exactly 30,013 miles, is a little over 3 years old, and it needs new tires). I'm so careful with car maintenance. She always has her oil changed and the tires rotated every 3,500 miles. Without fail. Always.
I told the guy that I don't want low-profile tires anymore, but I don't have a choice; that's what it takes. I had said something to Rick a month or so ago that I didn't like the way the car was handling, that I thought the ride was bumpy. But he reminded me that when we bought the car the salesman said that in the cold, low profiles do feel bumpy. He said it may feel like you're getting a flat tire, but you're not. Rick kept telling me I was worrying over nothing. (I did check the pressure and all the tires were down a bit, so I added air to all of them and that seemed to help the ride.) Well, I should have trusted my own feelings and taken the car in then because somewhere it got out of alignment and the guy said he thinks that's what caused the tires to go. Two tires are really bad; the other two will just barely pass, so we're going with four new tires.

Meanwhile, I have to drive Clarence to work tomorrow. And I will have to drive home and in snow, sleet and freezing rain tomorrow afternoon. Have I mentioned how bad the Cruiser is to drive during winter weather?

I give up.

Ouch... that'll be a merry Christmas... I miss my car back home dearly, but I certainly don't miss maintenance bills. Fortunately both times I needed new tires (winter and all season) fell pretty close to birthmas, so my dad gifted them to me but we got the cheaper all seasons since the car is 12 years old - really low mileage for 12 years old, but showing signs of battery problems, so we may have to retire the little one soon. No point going all out on tires that won't have anything to sit on them soon.

I know. I really wasn't expecting to need new tires on the Tucson, but well, things happen.

What makes it bad is that all of the vehicles are due for inspection within the same time period: the Tundra, the Tucson, and Clarence, the Cruiser. So if they all need something, it can get stressful. We just put new tires on Clarence this past summer, so I know he's OK. I told Rick we need to start getting earlier inspections or very late inspections to try to space them out a little bit. Three at one time is a little much.

I left for home at noon yesterday; had I waited til 4:00, I would have driven home in ice and I won't drive Clarence when the weather is bad. We didn't pick up the Tucson at the garage last night, again because til Rick got home, it was an icy/snowy mess; the roads weren't the best. Thankfully we're up over freezing now, about 37 degrees, so driving him into work this morning wasn't bad. But he was encased in ice, so I had to start the engine to try to thaw him out a bit.

Cars, ugh.  I wish we could do without sometimes.

I hear you on the tire thing.  Within the last 4 months, every car we own had to have tires in one way or another.

Know how you feel. Cars are a service you pay for in advance, and then you keep on paying for servicing them. Had so many issues with tires this year. Seems that every time I took it in, it was tire/steering/strut/shock related, and every time they said "and now we just need a tire adjustment and you're all set." Took my car in yesterday for minor work, and left with another appointment because they found a small leak in the radiator. And stop leak will do more harm in the long run than good. It's an 20+-year-old car that's not made anymore and sometimes parts are impossible to get. $$$ (Hoping it's not 4 $ signs.)

Pleased do any online search for you car make and model and find a forum. Join, browse for tires, post asking what folks suggest. I have found the forum for my car extremely helpful. There are always cat geeks with tons of knowledge and willing to share!

We didn't really have much time to do much of anything this time around for the inspection and that was my fault. I got the new registration papers around in time, but I completely forgot to call for inspection. As a result, the car was out of inspection when I took it into the garage. And I needed the car right away.

Rick has been researching tires avidly for his truck. Different tires, different tire stores, you name it; he's been checking it out.
