One of my cats, a loveable 1 year old Siberian, has a scratching habit that I can't figure out how to deal with.  He uses the scratchers I've set up - one on a Petco cat  tree, another made of sisal fiber I wrapped around a pole, and a horizontal cardboard scratch lounge.  But, what he really wants to scratch is the piping around the edges of upholstered items.  He pulls on it with his front claws and makes a very recognizable popping sound.  Saying NO or pulling him off is totally ineffective.  It helps to cover up the items, but he's gotten quite good at getting underneath covers to find his treasure.

Has anyone managed to cure their cats of a habit like this?  There's nothing on any of the scratching posts out there that's similar to piping on the edge of an upholstered seat.

I have furniture that still looks brand new despite my 2 girls as well as random foster cats.

I use clear contact paper, cut for custom fit depending on where and how you want it, and attach it with the double sided tape that comes in a roll like scotch tape because it is nice and strong sticking.

It stops them in their tracks, they hate their paws on sticky anything.

You can also pick up a piece of fabric piping and wrap it around part of his scratcher too, it won't take long to convert him to the correct place of scratching heaven!
