Raw Fed Luke Would LOVE Some Kibble

Luke has been raw fed for about 5 years and is in great health, I'd say, but I buy kibble and commercial canned cat food and when ever Luke is offered a piece of kibble, he gets excited and almost inhales it.

Would it be wrong if I fed him some once in a while, just to break up the monotony of the raw diet?

I give them a little sliced turkey breast or bacon once in a while, which they also love.

The occasional treat of kibble won't hurt
Have you considered hard crunchy treats or freeze dried raw or treats instead of kibble? Some cats like crunchy things but you don't necessarily need to give kibble. My previous cat loved Poultry Crispies treats. They're hard and crunchy just like kibble. ZiwiPeak air dried raw food would be similar.

Hi,

I got the kibble mostly to feed ferals. I have not given them frozen things yo mentioned.

You mean like jerky?

I gave them a can of Newman's Own organic chicken tonight and Luke loved it.

I'm just trying to add something interesting to their menu.

Does PetsMart have these by any chance?

Hi,

I don't think PetSmart sells Nature's Variety frozen or freeze dried products, just the regular kibble and canned. Do you have a Petco or Pets Supplies Plus? Both chains sells all the Nature's Variety products.

Stella and Chewy's is sold moslty at independent non-chainpet stores. Here's the store locator: http://www.stellaandchewys.com/store-locator/index.php These types of stores will also have Nature's Variety and other brands of freeze dried raw food and treats.

Any pet store will have freeze dried treats. If there are none in the cat aisle, look in the dog aisle. Choose a treat that is 100% meat and soft enough for a cat to eat.

Giving dry "food" with raw is quite a bad idea. A baked-to-smithereens cracker product digests very differently from the raw meat. This can cause GI irritation. Actualy, giving dry "food" to any cat isn't so good. Imagine giving it to a lion! Also there's good reason behind the nickname doom nuggets! I'd try a bit of canned tuna or the freeze dried treats instead.

This is from my own reading btw - I'm no vet. I suppose you could if it's a tiny amount and only given once in a great while...But just to be safe I would avoid dry "food" and stick with the aformentioned alternatives.

Many of the raw fed cats on this site were former kibble addicts.  One of my cats became a member of our family when she was an adult.  It took me two years to wean her from kibble, and she's been off it for two more years.  She seems to eat better when a variety of food is served - a bit of raw, a bit of cooked (all balanced), sometimes a bit of canned, all on the same plate.  She often eats 2/3 of the food on the plate and then waits for me to add a little crushed freeze-dried chicken as a topper before she licks the plate clean.  BTW, I totally understand that she has me wrapped around her little paw.

Except for a story I'll share next, we don't have kibble in the house.  My first recommendation would be what others have suggested - the freeze dried foods.  But I don't think feeding a kibble or two will be bad for your cat.

This weekend, my husband bought a big bag of kibble for the ferals he takes care of, and brought the bag inside the house for temporary storage.  We stuck it in a rarely used bathroom, but the door didn't get fully closed.  I walked by a few hours later, and discovered my cat (above) in the bathroom.  The bag had fallen over, had several rips and tears, and food was everywhere.  Needless to say, this cat did not show up when I called for early dinner and only ate a little at late-night dinner. I don't know how much she actually ate, but I fully expected her to vomit all the consumed dry food or have a bad bout in the litter box.  Fortunately she survived the episode.  Since then, she's actually been a little more fussy about her food and needing a little more topper.  Apparently the addiction to kibble is tough to break!
