We picked Little Helen up on Monday, and put her in her safe room. I expected that it would take less time that usual to go through cat introductions, based on her history- she came out of a hoarding situation with 20+ other cats, and Matt is a laid-back, friendly character. But socially, she was expected to be a wait-and-see challenge.

We fostered her from the shelter with the intention of taking the next three months "trying" to draw her out of her shell, since she was apt to hide in the back of her cage and bite if approached too quickly.....but we saw the sweet temperament hiding underneath when she blinked at us and rolled over in her cage so we were determined to help her.

Day one, she was put in her room and left alone. She didn't eat more than a teaspoon of tuna, and did her level best to disappear.

Day two she moved as far back as possible, but lets you pet her

Day three, you can pet her and she purrs, even rolling to let you pet her belly.

Today she came to the front of her closet shelf for some wet food, which I spoon-fed her. After eating, she got up the nerve(as long as I kept up a monologue) to come out of her closet and explore the room.

After an hour or so, she ventured out again, this time into the house....from the back room, through the kitchen and as far as the dining room.....Then the boys saw her and she scurried back under her bed.

The closest thing we had to trouble was when she nearly scurried under the bed in the other room-That's Midnight's scaredy-cat bed, and he didn't want her there. But she got out of there fast enough not to get swiped, and he's just as scared of her as she is of him
Midnight is the very definition of scaredy-cat :)

I look forward to seeing her get up her nerve over the next little while

Congratulations on such speedy progress with Little Helen.  It sounds like your home is the purrfect place for her to relax and find her purr.  I hope the meetings with the rest of your fur crew continue to go gently and smoothly to a point where they can start to share your time and space more and more.  May Little Helen continue to explore and settle in.
