My cat is 1. He sleeps in my rooms with me where he has his favorite sleeping spot. But when he wakes up in the morning, usually around 5:20, instead of going somewhere else in the house to explore or play, he meows and wakes me up. I have to pull him off the windows and shelves for 45 minutes until he finally goes back to sleep. I can't shut the door because his liter box and food are in the same room. How can I train him to go play somewhere else when he wakes up?? Thanks for the help!

I'm sorry nobody has been able to help you with this problem yet.  I'm not really sure, either--can you move his litter box and food to another room?

How about getting him some toys to play with so he won't get on the windows?

Ive come to the belief that cats have internal clocks. my cats do the same. if im not up at certain time "feeding time" they will climb all over me, sit on my chest meow loudly until i give in and get up and feed them. tthat might be your problem, maybe they are hungry, ive heard of many cats doing this.

Sinbad does this as well. Every morning. I continue to long for him to learn what weekends and holidays are.

At least his timing was based on our schedule, we get up at 5:30 weekday mornings, so most of the time his insistence on everyone being up at 5:30 isn't a problem. What's funny though is he even wants Tempest to be up. He wakes my hubby and I up, then goes to make sure she's up as well.

Of course, once everyone has eaten breakfast he goes back to sleep. Little pest.

Is he looking for food?  Or just wants to play?

If it's food, my story may give you hope.

For months after I adopted Ruby she would wake me every morning anytime after 5:00.  My radio comes on at 6:00 and I would ignore her, push her away, etc., yet she'd persist till I got up and fed her. Finally I started telling her "you have to wait for the radio" and putting her out of the room and shutting the door. I'd then get up when the radio came on and she'd get fed.

Suddenly one morning the *radio* woke me and I heard her galloping down the hall to the bedroom.   She now never wakes me before the radio and some days she's still in bed with me when the radio comes on.

If it's just to play, that's a bit harder, especially since the litter box is in your bedroom.  Could you get a 2nd litter box for any early morning nature calls, so you could close the bedroom door when he wakes you?

My cat does the same... except a bit worse because sometimes it's in the middle of the night, at 3am, 4am.

My solution was to start using earplugs to sleep. It's great! Now I can ignore her until my alarm rings in the morning. Also, it's always a good idea not to reward your cat with attention, or you could be encouraging bad behavior.

I hear that playing with them at night and feeding them right before bedtime helps. My cat is really active though, these tricks didn't help much.

Our last cat woke us up around 5 a.m. for breakfast, usually by sticking his paw in my mouth, so I got a feeder with a timer and filled it with dry food (he got half dry, half wet) before going to bed. Sometimes I'd wake up early and see him at the foot of the bed, sitting up straight with his ears pricked, waiting for the sound of the feeder opening. It worked.

Mogli is more polite. He doesn't start nagging for his (canned) breakfast until he senses that one of us is in the process of waking up. Both of us are early risers, though.
