Neutered male suddenly mounting female

Hello, I know I have not posted in a while but I guess that can be a good thing since it seems like things have been going good for a bit now.

But I do have a question I'm just not sure if this should be cause for concern or not. I know there are already a lot of posts about this and I have read them most saying it is normal but I could not find anyone who spoke of the exact specifications of what happened.

Okay so I have two cats, one male one female. They are both altered. My male has been altered since I got him about a year and a half ago. I think he was neutered around 8 months old and is about 2.5 years old now. My female was not spayed when I got her at about 6 months old but had surgery not long after.

Anyway these two cats have been together for about a year now and they get along great. They do wrestle around and play with eachother but nothing that causes harm to either of them. When I first got the female I was told she was actually younger than she was and she went into heat about a week after I got her. She was spayed right after.

So during that first time she went into heat I did notice my male try to mount her once or twice and actually bit her scruff the one time but I would just separate them and figured it was just instinct. So for over a year now he has never done this again that I was aware of.

The male does sometimes get a boner while grooming himself I guess if he gets over stimulated but he never even seems to notice. He has never mounted or trusted on me or any toy or anything except that one time. And when I pulled him away he did not seem to be "stimulated".

Well a little while ago as I was sitting on the couch and my female was asleep next to me he jumped up and looked like he was trying to mount her. I was like wth is he doing that just kind of pulled him away. 5 mins later he came back and was doing it again. I was really confused because he has never shown this type of behavior other than that one time.

So I pulled him off of her and when I looked down I realized he was "stimulated" and found it really odd since he is fixed and has never displayed this behavior at all since I got him and its been close to 2 years since his surgery.

And finally I would have to say the female is probably the dominant one although he was the resident cat when I got her, but he has never displayed any signs of aggression with her or signs he is fighting for control back.

I will take him to a vet if needed I just didn't know if I should be concerned. Thanks for any input.

I'm really sorry there hasn't been a reply earlier, @Faythe

I'm not quite sure what can be done about this.  Very rarely vets can miss a bit in the neutering process and hormones can come into play.  It's more common with females as it's easier to do.  But it can happen.  I wouldn't think this is the case, though, as it's been 2 years since the op.

Neutered cats will 'unsheath' the penis when they're grooming and at other times but the actual attempts at sex are a bit odd.

I'm wondering whether it can be a type of redirected aggression  (redirected humping??
)

Has anything changed around the place?  Are they indoor or indoor/outdoor and are there any other cats around they can see?

It's likely the lack of replies is due to this being a difficult, not so cut and dry type of issue.

Just a few comments that might explain the cause of this behavior.

One of course would be he was neutered after he began to feel his oats so-to-speak.

Another is perhaps she has a bit of ovarian tissue remains causing hormones to continue on, and he can smell this now and then.

Then there is always the dominance/attention seeking cat. Although she is top cat, which is usually the case for females to rule the home, if you take note on what is happening at the time he decides to do this it may help.

As you described, she was laying there with you and he came along and attempted, so is he seeking more attention from you? Possible.

What I have heard/learned is that, despite neutering, can still seem interested or get stimulated, and this is mostly from smells. Often times if they are neutered at a young age and never started sexual maturity before he was fixed, will usually not show behavior like this, but can still, while a male being fixed after he has grown to a sexually mature age/state may now and then go for it :)

Not sure this is much help..........

I don't have a clear answer for you, but my cat Pushy has recently starting this humping behaviour too. We noticed it last winter I think, and they're 11 years old now, so really random. Pushy will get this weird look and start twitching his rear. He will then sort of mount Wiggies and start with the humping motions. His penis is out when he does this, then he goes off and grooms himself down there.

It was quite upsetting when he first starting doing this!!! My little boy has turned into a perv. :shame:

They went to the vet last week and I mentioned this to her, and she just laughed. She doesn't think it's serious at all given that they were both neutered young and are in good health. There's no other behavioral issues going on, so we're no longer concerned. She had a funny story about irresistible her chubby cat is to her dog. :lol3:

As for Wiggs, he just sits there completely unfazed. Sometimes he'll get up and walk away, and Pushy just leaves him alone. It doesn't happen very often and doesn't seem to be an issue medically, nor behaviorally as Wiggs isn't fussed, so we're not concerned about it.

If this is happening a lot, I would be concerned and suggest speaking to your vet. I don't how they'd find out if bits were missed though - would a blood test show up the hormones?

Hey everyone thanks for the replies, sorry I didn't get back here earlier but for some reason my email alerts were not coming through.

Anyways yes they are both indoor or cats but there are strays in the neighborhood as well as cats downstairs that go out one of which is not spayed.

Thankfully the behavior has not happened again since that one night and I am thinking he was just fishing for my attention.

I have recently started going back to school a few months back and am not home as much as I had been so this may be part of the cause since they are both not getting as much attention as they are used to getting.

I am just going to keep an eye on them and see if anything else comes up because aside from that one incident everything else seems fine with them.

Again thank all of you for your time and advice!!

That sounds quite feasible.. that he's looking for attention.

Let us know how you go.
