We took in a stray about a month ago. We have 2 already but we could tell she was pregnant and I couldn't leave her in the cold.
She just gave birth to 1 dead kitten. I looked over and saw to legs hanging out of her. There didn't appear to be a sac on it. I pet her while she pushed the rest out and noticed there was no cord. I was there the whole time so there is no way she chewed through it.
Its been about 40 minutes. Javent felt any contractions and her belly is pretty loose, not tight or round at all.
We live in a small town. Nearest vet is over an hour away and closed till monday for thanksgiving and I can't find any emergency vet info so any help is appreciated

I'm so sorry about the kitten

As long as mother cat is not in or acting in distress no need to worry yet. ;)

That kitten might have been born too early and the rest could follow in hours or even days. As long as mother cat is fine in her self - no distress everything happening is quite normal :D

It really doesn't feel like there are anymore. She's very calm now. Still no other co tractions.
The kitten seemed very large. So I don't think it was premature.

Did the placenta come out? it doesnt sound so from your description.

Observe, if you left her even a short moment, it could be enough to eat up this placenta.  This may be also if  she pushes out the placenta hours afterwards (which happens sometimes in such here cases).

So although, it is prob no emergency as long as she is OK etc, as Gemsgem says, if the placenta hasnt come out, you may be forced to visit the vet anyways.  Its not dramatic hurry, but soon.

Phone at least and ask advice!

Tx for caring and helping  this lil sis of ours!

Good luck!

Okay. I'm an idiot. I though umbilical cord was attached to mom. Can't you believe I have 2 kids of my own? How embarrassing.
The placenta was delivered immediately with the kitten.

There has been just a couple spots of blood, but nothing since poor mommy cat just seems confused. She was trying to walk around as the kitten was coming out

Hehe :lol3:

Yes as long as placenta was delivered it's fine.

This might be the only kitten or there could be more to come. If more are born just try make sure each placenta has come away too.

A tiny bit of bleeding is normal after giving birth, this is her first litter then it's normal for them to be confused and not understand what is happening. Just comfort her ;)

She's still doing fine. No more bleeding. No more kittens?
How long should I keep her confined to one room?

Ah, if the placenta come out, and no visible troubles, you dont need to contact the vets. As GemsGem had already told.

It may have been the only kitten.  In this case, just to let her heal several days.  You will see how she fares!   Strays are usually of tough wood - the weak one perish early on...

If she has someone more, just wait and see - they can have pauses in the delivery both some hours, and even several days.  (very practical if the first kitten was somewhat premature, the others are coming out in their proper time).

as long she is OK and no visible troubles.   So in practice, you wait and see and let her heal, in both variations.

To the question how long confined - it depends also, if by stray you mean shy semiferal, or friendly dumped cat....

Healthwise  perhaps a week.   Longer if you deem it necessary, of course.

Good luck!
