I have recently noticed that my 1 year and 2 months old cat has red and hard scab on her back skin. Her fur is not affected. The cat is strictly indoor and is the only animal I have. The red scab is not coming from wound, or from fights. I took her to the vet and the vet was not sure about the scab and she suspected my cat is having an allergic reaction. But I am worried. Can an allergic reaction be this serious? What could be possible causes? Has anyone faced a similar situation in the past? I have done some research on the internet but I have never seen a similar case like this. Any suggestions will be welcome.

A few days have passed and the color of the scab is getting darker but it shows no sign of falling off.

Allergic reactions can be pretty intense.  I can't tell for sure is that the same place a monthly spot treatment for fleas would go and do you use a monthly treatment?

Hi Denice,

Thanks for your reply. My cat has never had fleas problem and thus has never had monthly spot treatment. Do you think it is related to fleas?

Could it possibly be ringworm? I know it's a big patch but ringworm can get pretty big, especially if they are scratching it. Get her to a vet for further analysis, but until then try to avoid touching her unless you can wash your hands immediately afterwards.

Bigperm20, thanks for your reply. The vet said it is unlikely to be fungus infection. I also think it is not likely ringworm or any fungus infection, because the tissue of the skin looks very hard and I think she might underwent a phase of rodent skin and I just did not notice it by then.

Hi! Did you ever find out what this was? My cat has this right now. We got ointment from the vet but the vet doesn't know what it is and it's not going away.... Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the site. :wave3: This thread is from 2014 and I don’t know if zeuss will answer. You’d probably have more luck starting your own thread. :)
