Just sharing.  We used to use clay litter, but then tried switching because of the dust and the smell (fragrance) and that it's not sustainably produced.  We tried Swheat Scoop for a while until we realized one of our cats was eating it!  Anyway, we seem to have settled on pine pellets, and in our area we can also get pine shavings.  I'm doing about half and half currently.  The pine pellets are very absorbent and the shavings are a little more inviting (softer).  A giant bag of pellets in like $7 and lasts a months, so we are money ahead.  There are different types of pellets, so we try to get the smaller ones and the non-fuel type.  ABM from Eagle valley is our preference. Thought I would share.

They sell these sifting trays that can help with the sifting of dust out of the pine pellets. I have seen people make them as well with a drill and 3 plastic storage containers.

Yeah, I made one with some boards and some sceen/mesh material.  I was getting good m,ileage out of the pellets.  Now, with my 50/50 ratio, the box is ready to change when all the pellets have been used up, so I just chuck the whole thing.  The pine shavings are very cheap, like $6-7 for this enormous bag.  I get that from the farm store, as I think people use it for horses or rabbits or something.
