Hi;

Brand new to group, this isn't my first have taken in 3 in the past year.  I think this is the last of the strays that hang around my house.  This one I just caught yesterday and it has a bad eye.  It is clouded and gray.  Didn't touch it or anything cause I don't want to freak it out too much.  Don't know the sex either.  But this eye worries me.  Anyone out there have experience with a bad eye and what it involves. Doesn't look infected but I haven't gotten a close look. Thanks for any help.  It doesn't hiss and is out in the open today and isn't doing much except a little howl if I get too close.

Hi! I'm new here as well but I was in your place just a couple of months ago. We now have a rescued kitten with a dead eye. He had goo coming out of it and the inside of the eye was trying to break through to the outside. A trip to the vet got us an oral and a topical antibiotic. Luckily we had gotten to him soon enough that it cleared up fast and we didn't need to have the eye removed.

Hi;

Thanks for the advice, not able to feel comfortable picking the cat up yet so, no trip to the vet.  It isn't oozing.  Looks like it may be a old injury and possible blindness since it is gray and no pupil is visible.  Whatever happened to the poor dear seems as though it was a while ago.  Kinda wondering if it is possible to live with the eye or if it needs removal.......................yuck, it seems hard to live with that thought.  Nothing I can do until it becomes tame enough.  It doesn't seem wild like a real feral.  it watches me and doesn't react when I put food down.  That's another story too.  Only has eaten a litle cereal, won't eat anything I put down and hasn't pooped or peed.

Sounds like it is an old injury since theres nothing oozing, which means the eye has healed but it is indeed blind in that eye. The only reason a dead eye would need to be removed is if its infected for too long.

Hi;

It came out and let me touch it, I got a picture and I think I can see the eye behind it.  It isn't oozing but it is runny.  I can't pick it up yet it doesn't trust me enough. It seems like it might be a film???? I don't know?????? Can't get to the vet cause I can't pick it up to put in a carrier.  Quite a dilema.  Any suggestions?

Put some tuna in the back of the carrier and when it goes inside close the door and drape a towel over the carrier. Let the vet know ahead of time that the cat is a semi feral- they may need to sedate it. I wouldn't wait too long because it may be possible to save the eye. Yes, the cat will get upset over the ordeal, but it will get over it. Sometimes we need to do what we need to do even if it's upsetting to the cat. It's wonderful tbat you're helping this cat.

You could try to put a trap in the room the kitty is in and then bring him in inside the trap. However, I think you are correct that this is not a feral cat since he already let you touch him. With that being the case he will probably come around fairly quickly so that you can take him to the vet in a few days. He's lived with the eye for a while and I don't think he will be harmed by waiting a few more days.

Other than taking him to a vet there isn't really anything you can do. With the signs you see it could be a number of different things and you need a proper diagnosis to treat. Most treatments for eye conditions require eye drops so you have to be able to handle the cat to treat. Since you say it looks like he has a film on his eye I wonder if he may have "dry eye" which can be treated with a kind of eye drops. I wouldn't assume that the eye has to be removed or that the cat is blind.

If you can't get him into a carrier or something else you could carry him to the vet in (another poster mentioned putting hers in laundry baskets) I would make sure to spend a lot of time sitting with him in the next few days to gain his trust soon and then take him to the vet.

Good luck and thanks for helping the little guy/gal.

Hi everyone;

Thanks for the help.  Well, yesterday I got to rub him all over found he is an uneutered male, Yuck.  Today he won't let me near him.  I'm not going to try and put him in a carrier until he somewhat trusts me.  He seems to be one of those who doesn't forgive easily.  I have him locked in my computer room and spend as much time with him as I can.  Time will tell, I figure he'll come around in his time, and the eye thing isn't new. He'd be living with that if I hadn't caught him.  I beleive there was a reason why I caught him now after trying for more than a year, what that is we'll see.  I did some research about glaucoma coming from injuries and his eye is an exact match for the pictures they show.  I have some n-acetyl carnosine drops coming, much research about them clearing glaucoma. We'll see.  I want to get him neutered more than anything.  Don't want any bad habits starting.  Well we appreciate your prayers in this journey.

Warm regards;

Rose
