Some ahole abandoned a cat on my street a few weeks ago. She's a young cat, maybe 7-8 months. She's really sweet but anytime i pick her up or am anywhere that she can get on my lap she immediately starts trying to nurse anywhere she can. My shoulder, arm, leg, any where on my body. Does anyone know if there is any way to help her get over this behavior?

One of my orphan rescued kittens was doing it until he was 2 years old. It happens (not always) when they are separated too soon from mom. I accepted this behavior and did not try to stop it. Perhaps other members can give you  better advise.

I have a 3 yr old (Sassy) that sucks on my t-shirts. She was abandoned at 2 weeks old, along with her sister. Sassy is very dependent and has separation anxiety. She sleeps on top of my head or directly beside me at night...she has to be touching me. Her sister on the other hand is very independent and does not have the suckling issue.

I just take it as being a part of who Sassy is. In my case, trying to stop her creates more anxiety for her.

My cat is 3 1/2 and still nurses on a certain blanket we have had since she was a baby. I really think its just comfort. Maybe encourage nursing on an item instead? Its really not something you can break she just wants comfort.

i brought home a new kitten back in august who has this habit of nursing on me, Ive seen them do it on blankets before but never had a cat do that on me. He will usually go after my fingers, when im sleeping he loves going after my ears and nose. its just too cute for me to try and stop him, he looks so content and hes purring while he does it. maybe he will outgrow it,if not having an adult cat do that might hurt!

My six-month-old boy cat does that. He sees a nipple. He goes for it, purring away and making biscuits. I had hoped he would have grown out of it by now. NOPE! I guess he has fond memories of nursing with his five sisters.
