Ellie the Cat is 3 years old and since yesterday morning, she has been drooling, not eating or drinking (even her treats, which she loves), she has become somewhat lethargic....faces walls when she rests and is constantly in the "muffin pan" position. If we touch her tummy at all she meows loudly and she isn't even going outside to go to the bathroom.

Her vet can't see her until Thursday, and I am unable to afford an emergency visit. How can I keep her fed and hydrated until she can get in to see her vet? What can this be? 2 more clues: she is a night owl and goes outside every night from about 7:00pm to around midnight and sometimes later. The night before she got sick, she was out until almost 2:30am and that was because she was chasing a raccoon that she managed to chase halfway up a light pole! She came in immediately after she did that, and has been sick since!!

Please tell us what this can be, and how we can help Ellie!!

Sincerely,

pzzytat

Unfortunately no one can diagnose your pet online. You need the vet. For now, keep her comfortable, try hand feeding her and giving her water through a syringe with out a needle about 3 times a day.

I hope she is feeling better soon! Hugs.

Thank you for giving me an idea of how I can keep her hydrated! I will keep you all posted!

Is there any chance she licked something poisonous? One of my cats got glue on her fur a few years ago, tried to lick it off and then drooled like crazy because the glue was irritating her mouth.

If I were you I'd take her to your regular vet now and see if they'll take a look at her without an appointment. If it is something toxic it needs to be dealt with right away.

Ellie goes outside during the evening hours, so we are uncertain what she has come into contact with lately.....other than a raccoon she ran up a light pole the night before she got sick. Her tummy area is real tender, so we are letting her go wherever she wants to make herself comfortable. To the vet we go tomorrow!!

I think that's a good idea. Keep us posted on her progress.

Hope everything goes well at the vet. (If you can get there before they open they'll sometimes take a look at an emergency case before their appointments arrive.)

11/17: With best friend's help we were able to get Ellie to the vet and she received an antibiotic and fluids for dehydration and she is looking better already!! The vet isn't entirely certain what's up with Ellie. This is the second time she has gotten a mysterious fever and won't eat, but this is the first time the fever was so high and that she had stopped eating for a whole 3 days!

But Ellie is going to get better, thanks to my BFF forever, T.M. Waltman!!! And Dave Davidson for keeping me somewhat calm, and thinking more positively...!

11/18: Still working to get Ellie on the mend. She has consumed about a tablespoon of baby cat food, and about 10 cat treats. She seems stronger, but I have faith in her coming around soon.

11/19: trying to get some water in Ellie, which is hard enough I don't want to force her...but she just caught sight of her favorite prey...a big moth...she is off and hunting!! Good sign!!

11/20: I have been slowly feeding her the kitty baby food from the vet (A and D). She wanted treats so badly yesterday that she knocked over the container and pushed it over to me...talk about giving me a big hint!! She finally drank some water today...quite a bit actually. Her head still feels warm, but she used her cat window to go outside for almost 3 hours.

Thank you for your advise, and we are so happy that our vet yelled at her bookkeeper for not allowing us to bring Ellie in when she needed to. The bookkeeper wouldn't let us carry a balance due to so many others not paying their bills off and it's getting late in the year. But with us being their clients for over 3 years with Ellie, and always paying our balances in full...the vet felt we were being treated badly.

Thanks again!!

Love,

Ellie's Mom, Diane

11/16: Ellie the Cat is really sick...her tummy is causing her some pain, but her vet can't see her until Thursday...without a costly emergency visit charge. If they have to x-ray to see if there's some blockage it's almost $200 just for the x-ray! (Because they have to sedate her to do it.)

11/20: Ellie ate quite a bit of her baby cat soft food, and quite a few cat treats. She also finally had a good amount of her water and went outside again for about 20 minutes. Now she is bathing like she does when she beds down at night...but of course it's raining out, so she probably doesn't want to get sick again.

Thanks for your support and advise!

Love,

Diane/pzzytat

Great news, I'm glad the vet was able to do something for her.

Hope she's feeling much better soon.

She is much better now. She has even resumed going outside, her favorite after hours "social scene."
