My husband found a baby kitten stuck under our trailer and since it was freezing outside we took it in. its been 3 days since we found it and i made sure i got informed right on how to properly take care of it. today while we were coming back home we saw the momma cat outside and it was identical to the baby kitten. i wanted to see if maybe it wanted the kitten back but as it got close to it it grabbed it with its teeth and i panicked because it was being really rough and the baby was crying really loudly. after that i quickly grabbed the baby kitten and noticed it was bleeding from a puncture on its side. i cleaned the wound and i scheduled an appointment with a vet for tomorrow but i just want to know why would the mom hurt it?

From what I know of feral mothers and their kittens, if the kittens isn't theirs they will growl and swat at the kitten. I have heard of feral mothers biting and injuring their own kittens. Sometimes it's because they don't smell right, as Mickiesmoma said. Sometimes they decide to reject the kitten for some reason. Do you know how old the kitten is? Eyes open or closed? Eyes blue or turning green/yellow? Able to run around or still crawling?

If it's a very young kitten it's unlikely that the mother would have left it alone. She may have decided that it was sick and a risk to any siblings and so moved it from her nest. If it's a bit older it may have wandered off on it's own or she may have another litter on the way and so chased the older kittens off.

Thanks for taking care of the kitten. He or she is going to need you, even kittens over 12 weeks old can't survive for long without their mum.

Let us know if you have any questions on how to take care of him/her.

Bless your hearts, both of you, for trying to rescue this little one. It is very possible that mom was moving the kittens when you may have found the little one stuck under the trailer. Just a guess. Mom obviously came back looking for the kitten. She probably was much more harsh in grabbing the kitten because you were so close by and then a bit of a struggle. Mom cat was terrified more of you and that is why she grabbed her baby so tightly. :alright: Don't worry, hun. Honestly, IMO, the best thing at this point is to take in the kitten fulltime as you are. Wonderful you are going to the vet with the little one. Feeding will be necessary around the clock right now so I added some very informative kitten saving links below to help you along in your efforts to keep this kitten thriving. Keep us posted. We are happy to help in anyway we can. :vibes::vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

I agree totally with Feralvs analysis.

Now, what happened may be the best anyways.  The best gift you can give to this mom and the kitten, is if you DO  take it in, foster,  and either  have it with you furever, or find it a good adoption home.  Not it happened  perhaps two weeks before it was the ideal time - but - here you are, flying the plane, and if you do it carefully, there will be an wonderfuly flying, and a nice, solid, trustworthy landing too.

Tx a lot for caring!

Good luck!
