Hello Everyone!

I've seen some posts on here about congested cats and nasal polyps, etc...But wanted to seek some advice on my situation. My 9 year old female cat began to have mucus discharge from her right nostril that also contained blood. I took her to the Vet and the Vet wanted to sedate my cat and scope her nose. The cost for the procedure was projected to be $4000. I love my cat, but that is a lot of money. I asked for other alternatives and she recommended antibiotics. Since we were at the office, my cat got a shot. The Vet said it would last about 4 weeks. Sure enough, 4-6 weeks later, my cat had a bit of discharge but sounds more congested and wheezing from her nose. I called the Vet and she recommended steroids. I picked up the prescription, but I think steroids is a bit extreme. I asked about swabbing her nose, or an ointment, anything else. But, the Vet said without the $4000 procedure, she could only recommend steroids. But, there are so many side effects. I'm thinking I should get a second opinion.

Thoughts??

Thank you!

Convenia the antibiotic injection is usually not too effective for upper respiratory infections according to my vet. The antibiotic probably was not effective and another anitbiotic needs to be used. I've done the same with mine and tried the easier injection and it didn't work to get rid of the infection completely. If you didn't hear this from the vet the second visit I'd find a new vet ASAP become the infection can really become worse and steroids won't help. Is the discharge yellow or green? To ease your kitty's breathing you can also try a child's vaporizer or putting you cat in the bathroom with a hot shower for a minute. It is important to keep your cat sneezing so your kitty can keep nasal passages open.

I know that when my cats, all four of them) had an upper respiratory infection my vet recommended that I do the steam thing in the bathroom.  Run hot water in the bathtub, gather up the cats and put them in the bathroom, close the door quickly and let them have their sauna time for minimum of 10 minutes.  I think I did that for about two weeks at twice a day.  The vet had prescribed doxycycline as the antibiotic.

I would seek a second opinion and get a culture & sensitivity test for the discharge.  The C&S test will tell the vet if there's an infection, if it's viral or bacterial, and which med will most effectively treat the infection.  You can help clear the congestion by running a vaporizer 24/7 near where she spends most of her time, steaming her in the shower, using baby nose drops such as Little Noses 2 times a day.
