Well, I've finally figured out the easy way to clip Jasmine's claws -- first you spend a couple days clipping her paw fur whenever she sits on your lap. Then when you're ready to clip her claws you can actually see what you're doing, and it goes quickly, with less danger of cutting into the quick.

Good plan !!! Glad it is working. I prefer with long-haired kitties to keep the pad/feet hairs short as well. Helps with litter tracking and litter getting stuck in the hair and pads. Easier to see those claws too!! :bigthumb:

Forget litter tracking, I'm starting to wonder how tough it would be to trim her petticoats so we don't keep stepping in turds that have stuck to her fur just long enough to end up on the floor.

Has anyone here done that? What technique did you use? In a pinch I do have a cat muzzle I can use to make it easier.

Never mind. I'll search the site, and if I don't find it I'll start a new thread.

I believe what you are referring to is called a sanitary shave.  I have no personal experience with them.  My mother has a long haired cat; but I don't think they've ever had one of those done.

Sweet Thing and Floppy were both long hairs, but I've never considered it before. Thanks for supplying the terminology for me; that will make searching the site much easier.

Yes - sanitary shave. I never went to that extreme but with my long-haired kitty, I always trimmed the "pants" back there to avoid the exact issue you describe. My cats are all so used to being groomed that I didn't need a helper. I combed the pants and then trimmed off as much as I wanted with shears/scissors.

Well, I can't afford to take her in to the groomer every month or so, and I know she won't tolerate an actual shave coming from me. It's going to have to be scissors. Besides, she doesn't really need shaving, just short fur in her pantaloons. Short hairs never have any problems with this issue.

Have you run into any problems with this?

Yeah, plus you don't want a cat with a scissors phobia. I was planning to use regular scissors, not the little, sharp embroidery scissors that work so well for paw fur; that should make it easier to avoid hurting her. Also, I want this fur short, not gone entirely, so getting too close to skin is out anyway.

You need to use blunt ended scissors. I have a long-haired footed cat. Trimmed his nails last night. I didn't find that the hair between the pads got in the way.
