Hi guys, I just went to pet my kitty and saw a big cut on his cheek!! I have no idea what it's from. It wasn't there earlier and I looked around but couldn't find any sign of blood. It doesn't seem to bother him too much but I'm worried about infection. Is there anything I can put on him?? Maybe just clean it with mild soap and water?? I'm worried about anything medicated in case he licks at it, since it's right beside his mouth. Any tips??

Ouch! That looks painful. Fortunately cats are tough and tolerate pain pretty well. She probably scratched her cheek on a sharp corner of some kind. It happens.

I would put some Neosporin, or Animax ointment if you have it, on it. It's not going to harm her if she ingests a bit of it. Then I'd just keep an eye on it. It should heal on its own. If it looks like it's getting infected an oral antibiotic may be in order but for now Neosporin for a day or two and then just keep it dry should be enough.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if we have Neosporin here (in Canada). I don't think I've ever seen it but I will take a look today.

Neosporin is a brand name. It's also sold as a generic called Triple Antibiotic Ointment which contains bacistracin, neomycin and polymyxin. That should be available in Canada. It's basically just an antibiotic ointment for wound care. A similar antibiotic ointment would work too.
