I keep buying vacuum after vacuum. Im wondering if me having to vacuum up litter all the time, if that's what's causing my vacuums to loose suction so quick. Looking for own experience on pet vacs. Also wanted to keep it under $200.00.

Maybe it's the litter you use? I have two vacuums - a Miele and a Philips - and both are around 15 years old and going strong, despite my vacuuming litter. I always use a very fine-grained, virtually dust-free litter. Are you checking and replacing the vacuum's filters on a regular basis?

We do have a number of threads discussing vacuum cleaners, plus some descriptions in the reviews section.

I use clay litter with baking powder. I guess its a large size. When I use the little pebbles, the cats won't use it. And the filters on the new vacuums or at least on mine is washable. So I don't have to replace it but once a year. But the real problem is the carpet. I can vacuum bare floors and carpet. But it doesn't seem to want to pick up the fur on it. It'll sweep at it, but will only pick it up when I pull the vacuum off the carpet.

I can't think of the brand of vacuum I have off the top of my head (I want to say Dirt Devil but I'm doubting myself); but its just a standard vacuum we purchased at Walmart when our 2 were kittens; so it's 9 years old now.  My husband is diligent about changing belts and the filters.  My DD and I have long hair; so that usually contributes to belts wearing out or hair tangling around it more than litter problems.  It does shoot the litter back out at you at times (which hurts!
).

My mother has a vacuum that won't pick things up like that.  She keeps several area rugs and runners out because her old dog slips on the hardwood floors.  Every now and then she pulls out a +20 year old vacuum to use.  It sounds like it's going to saw through the floor; but it gets the hair like the other can't!
I have no idea who made that vacuum; but it's sort of a mint green color if that tells you anything about it!  It might be getting closer to 30 years old.

My vacuum I have now is an Eureka, but its one of the cheaper ones. I bought the same one back in February and by May, the motor burnt up in it. I was tight on money, I took the broken one back to the store and exchange it for a new one.
And I hear what your saying about when one of those little litter pebbles gets flung out under the vacuum. It can feel like a needle prick sometimes

I just got a Hoover Windtunnel Pet vacuum cleaner. It was rated really high on all the pet reviews, although the regular Hoover Windtunnel rated slightly higher. But Costco had the Pet version for $99 so that's what I bought :tongue2:. It seems to work nicely and all the switches/pedals/attachments/etc. are intuitive and conveniently located. I can't say anything about longevity yet though.

I think I should better explain myself. The vacuum has no problem picking up litter or everything else, but fur, hair, fuzz. It's wierd. What it does is when I pull back on my vacuum, on the carpet mind you, it suck everything up but I notice when I push the vacuum foward I see all the fur that the vacuum gethers but doesn't suck up. Also the attachment that "supposed" to vacuum off the furniture, doesn't do squat. So really what I'm trying to say is, if there is a vacuum out there that will suck up hair/fur. That's my main problem. I've seen that the new SHARK vacuum can do it, but I can't remember the actual full name of it. But if anybody can give me a vacuum that's good for that, please share with me. I'm at my wits end with not picking up the fur problem, but I refuse to get rid of my kitties.

The Hoover Pet I just got picks up fur just fine. Have you looked yours over for a reason it's not getting the fur up? Maybe the beater bar is adjusted wrong or something? Any beater bar vacuum should at least do a middling job on picking up fur, not just leave it there in a clump---something is wrong if it does that.

Well I've come to the conclusion my vacuum is about to die. I started vacuuming yesterday and 5 minutes into it, it smelled as if the motor was over heating. I've checked all hoses, belts, filters, and suctioning. The suction isn't as strong as it used to be, but other than that, I don't know what's going on with it.

I bought a Bissel over the summer and found it picks up an awful lot of fur. Its bag-less which is wonderful. The suction on it is impressive. My zebra finches are way messier than my cats, and it gets up all the bird seed hulls, too!

Where did you find your vacuum? And if you don't mind me asking, what was the price on it?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a carpet cleaner? Ritz throws up and the carpet is now two tone color buff. Thanks.

Seventh Generation carpet cleaner does a great job on stains. My previous cat (RIP) used to return the kibble I ignorantly fed him. It turned the carpet a bright yellow. I used an enzyme cleaner followed by the Seventh Generation cleaner.

Thanks! Currently I'm using an enzyme cleaner and some carpet cleaner the professional carpet cleaning company left behind. Not working well.
