I have read the handful of threads here on cats who have either had no interest in, or had an upset tummy from the Epigen 90.  Presumably due to the high protein content.

I decided, when I saw it on sale, to give that kibble a try since it also appears to help with weight loss, and our younger boy, who is an extreme kibble guy, needs to drop 2lbs.  Both our boys have had 1/8c each 2x per day (morning/night time).  We feed 90% wet (Rad Cat Chicken, Weruva Chicken, Instinct Chicken and Sheba Chicken Pate) that neither have ever had anything but perfect litterbox action on.  The small amount of kibble they were getting was also Instinct Chicken w/Raw Boost.

--The youngest has shown no signs of an upset tummy or litterbox issues.

--The oldest threw up last night, within a couple of hours after eating his evening snack/meal - the Epigen 90.  This morning he has also dry heaved a couple of times but not thrown up.  And again, it was within a couple of hours of his morning kibble.

They are both DSHs so we've never had hairball issues.

I'm curious as to thoughts on whether it is the Epigen's high protein amounts combined with the higher protein wet foods we regularly feed.  Way too much overall?

And whether it would take a full week before it upset his tummy.   They have both been eating the Epigen for 8 days now and last night was the first tummy issue we've seen in forever with our oldest.

I had the same problem with Orijen. It is 80% protein. Epigen is higher protein and my kitty didn't like it.
I went with Acana at 70% protein (same company as Orijen). No issues the last 3 months. She likes all three flavors and I rotate daily.

Tried Epigen out on a foster cat who wouldn't eat earlier in the year. She wouldn't touch it...And neither would anyone else in the house, which, considering the number of cats, is saying a lot. Even Felix who will eat ANYTHING wouldn't eat that. Ended up putting it outside for the raccoons.

I have had similar problems with both Orijen and Epigen 90. I am finishing up a bag of Epigen 90 with my girl right now.

Her poop gets really smelly on both Orijen and Epigen 90. In addition, it has become an overly dark color too. On a few occasions, the food has caused her to have really soft and mushy stool.

I don't think either food is bad; I fact I think they are excellent, but the problem is that every cat is different. While cats need much higher animal protein than dogs or say other animals, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing for some cats.

So, I am going to try Nature's Variety Instinct dry Rabbit formula and Nature's Variety Instinct dry Chicken formula for her kibble. They are still considerably higher in animal protein than other brands, but still a bit lower than Orijen and Epigen 90.

For those worried about weight loss, I am trying only those two NVI kibble a because they are the lowest in carbs of all the NVI kibbles.
