Are all indoor cats intimidated by strangers?

Whenever the mailman or water delivery guy stop by she runs to the window or door just to growl at them -_- perhaps a dog reincarnated in the wrong animal? Lol She's strictly kept indoors and doesn't really socialize with "strangers" because we hardly get any visits. She used to let herself be picked up by other people when she was a kitten but as she got older she would hide when we'd have company over. Are any of your cats shy around "strangers"?

No, one of our cats is extremely social, like a goofy dog-like social where no matter who is near or inside the apartment or house, whether he's just met them or has recognized and known them for years, he'll run up and start marking their legs (hard, like enthusiastic headbutts on your shins) and begging for pets. If he hears someone near the front door, even if both of us are home, he'll run to the door, sit down, and wait for someone to come in. We live in an apartment building so a lot of people frequent the hallways coming and going.

Our other cat was super shy when we visited her at her foster home, and for the first 3 weeks here, she was very shy and very skittish, hissing and hiding. Now, when strangers come over, she doesn't bolt into the other room to hide. She stands in the living room and kind of surveys to see if they're safe and will let them make the first (gentle) move. Once she's sniffed them out and gotten some pets, she just wanders around them, tries to sniff them more when they aren't looking.

Thankfully neither have exhibited any anxiety or aggression towards people by the door.

Our indoor only cats are super social, in spite of the fact that our household is fairly quiet.

I don't watch a lot of TV, or have the radio going.

We don't have a lot of company over.

We don't have kids.

Yet, when the roofers came to make repairs, our cats came downstairs to say "hi" to the crew lead. They literally surrounded him (good thing he liked cats).

And for the last couple days, I've been sitting for my girlfriend's 3 and 5 year old kids.  Today we had lunch at my house, and all the cats but the oldest came down to socialize.  Even the excited 3 year old boy didn't deter them.

Whenever we do have visitors, they always comment on how relaxed and social our cats are.  I chalk it up to the Ocicat nature, as well as how we've always manhandled them since kittenhood.

My Aby is social so he's not afraid of strangers. He may take a few minutes to size up the stranger before getting curious and walking up to the person. My DMH will hide the second someone knocks on the door.

My indoor cat (who gets leashed walks) is definitely shy around strangers. She growls at them as they come up to the house, then once they enter, she hides to watch them. After about 10-15 minutes, she realizes they're safe, so she'll then come out, and check them out. Once she's sniffed their stuff, and our visitors, she's much more relaxed! :)

I think it really depends on the cat!

I have 3 cats. The youngest is Trinity who was found  at 4 weeks old on the side of a road. She was with her littermate who was dead. Any way we do not have many visitors at all. My 9 y/o daughter has friends over and she seems to be ok with the friends. Although it has been a while since she has had a friend over so it will be interesting to see if now that she is 1 y/o whether or not she will still be ok with kids.

The first time I realized she hid when strangers came over was when Verizon came to install the Fios. He was here for 4 hours. When he left I couldn't find Twilight. I looked all through the house. Looked outside around  culvasak  thinking she may have slipped out since the Verizon worker was in and out in and out. I called and called for her. My daughter was crying. I posted lost kitty on our neighborhood's web sight. Some kids who read the post came out to help us search for Twilight. I looked for  the umpteenth time again in the back of my narrow closet and found her hiding behind a box. It was at that moment I realized just how much Twilight meant to me and also when I was frantically searching  for her.

There has been 1 or 2 times when a male stranger was in the house but I didn't panic I just let her come out when she was ready. Next week two women will be over it will be interesting to see if Twilight will react the same way when female strangers are in the house. Will keep you posted
