Hello all - glad to have found this site as I could use some guidance/advice.

My senior cat (approximately 14-16 years old - adopted in 2002 and the shelter said he was 2 at the time) - was diagnosed with large cell lymphoma in March 2014. The vet did an ultrasound and a small aspiration of cells which indicated the cancer. He was put on Prednisolone (1ml twice a day) and anti-nausea meds. We experimented with a bunch of them, but I am currently giving him two 16 mg tabs of cerenia per day which is a lot but he drools a lot without it. The pharmacist accidentally gave me a really high dosage of cerenia for about a month and my cat really started to thrive again, but they realized it was an error and my vet insisted on lowering his dosage due to what she felt could be neurological side effects (which is crazy to me being he already has cancer!)

Pop (my kitty) was given 90 days max to live in March and because of his age/weight (he's about 9 lbs) the vet recommended not starting chemo so I agreed.

My cat is on high dosage of anti-nausea meds and other then diarrhea several times a day (occasionally he has a solid poop) he seems pretty much like himself aside from some lethargy and skinniness. I am not crazy about my vet because I went back recently and asked if they were *sure* it was large cell lymphoma being he has lasted so much longer than his initial diagnosis and the vet said he "could" have small cell lymphoma or IBD, but they were 99% sure it was large cell lymphoma.

Anyway, I am just wondering if anyone has any advice/experience on how best to treat a senior cat with this diagnosis. I would love to remedy his diarrhea which is his only major symptom (the food does go through him - he eats 4x's what he used to) and find out how others have treated the nausea. I also think I need to get a new vet!

Thank you!

It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion (except in the wallet). Our cat had a large cell tumour which caused stomach acid and vomitting problems. Her organs were being displaced by the tumour. We treated initially with Pepcid AC, and then when that eventually stopped working, we switched to ranitidine. We did not try cerenia. Stomach acid was the main problem. Drooling is a symptom of that. Our cat was the opposite. She suffered from constipation which we were able to control. Our cat was not a candidate for pred. She also had other issues caused by kidney problems. We treated with supportive measures only.

Life expectancy depends on the tumour. Every tumour is different and every cat is different. Ours started out on or near her liver and by the end had taken up her entire abdomen. The tumour did not constrict major organs or the digestive system; or cause pain. She lasted 11 months from the initial diagnosis (clearly seen on an X-ray).

If you look up cerenia online, diarrhea is listed as one of the side effects. Did the diarrhea start before cerenia? If the cerenia is causing the diarrhea, it's worth talking to your vet or to another vet about the situation, especially if your Pop is losing weight.

Hope this helps ...
