Hi

I am hoping that someone with experience of stomatitis can help me.

My little boy was diagnosed some 3 weeks ago and last week underwent tooth extraction.  He only has 2 upper and lower fangs remaining.

The problem is this - he still has a decent appetite after tooth removal but every time I go to feed him he runs away and hides in a corner.  With a little gentle persuasion he finally goes to his bowl and eats all his food without problem.  Is the problem with feeding time now a little physcological?    He also seems quite depressed.  Is this all normal after such a big surgery?

Any advice is appreciated.  My vets are great and have given fantastic guidance but these are the little things I'm concerned about.

Thanks so much x

I've had several cat's get  full mouth extractions due to chronic stomatitis in my rescue cats.

Usually they are eager to get back to eating since their pain prior to removal meant eating was painful, so they think they are starving :)

Psychological? Depressed? I sort of doubt it.

It might still be the anesthesia hasn't completely left his system just yet.

It's critical that every bit of root from the teeth were removed, otherwise soon enough there will be inflammed areas popping up again.

I'd say give it a full week post-op and see if he doesn't get better and get on with the food.

Of course, he should get canned only now until he is fully healed, then he will eat dry fine too, cats aren't that big on chewing the dry anyway, so the teeth don't seem to have much affect that way.

(ever notice cat vomit looks like whole dry food pieces?)
