This past Saturday morning my cat was acting normal then all of a sudden like turning on a light, things went south quickly without any known reason. Trina lost all memory. She doesn't know her name, her surroundings, how to use her litter /box, who we are, or her commands. NOTHING is familiar with her. Her vet is at a loss. She did take blood today and we will know the results tomorrow, but besides that nothing physical is wrong. Does anybody anywhere have any ideas what could be going on? My Trina is healthy other than this. She is/was a very active kitty who always kept us on our toes. Now she just sits around in a room by herself, scared to come out and not sure where she is supposed to sit. I saw an article yesterday but do not remember where about diet and preservatives. If it was on here, please tell me where so that I can direct my vet to those articles please! Thanks!

She may have had a stroke or was so traumatized by something she is senseless. The possibilities are endless, unfortunately, it could be poison or even a head injury. You did the right thing by taking her to the vet and will hopefully know more when the test results are in. If the tests come back negative then there was a traumatic event and only time and lots of reassurance and love will help. I hope someone can help you with your questions about diet, you may want to go to the 'forums' column right under The Cat Site logo - and click on Cat Nutrition or Cat Health and look through those for your answers, especially if it was a while ago. Good luck and keep us posted.

Gosh, I've never heard of anything happening to a cat to such an extent that they even forgot how to use the litterbox.  That's really weird.

Is there any update on her bloodwork?

Is she improving at all?

I've never heard of this, but she could have traumatic amnesia.  What happened exactly before she lost her memory? Even small details like a car backfiring or a loud noise might have traumatized her to the point of getting PTSD.  If this is the case, patience and re-teaching her the things she has forgotten is the only thing you can do.

The problem could be medical.  A brain tumor, a brain injury, a clot that hit her brain, a neurological issue.  Can you take your cat to a specialist?

Good luck and I hope you can get to the bottom of this!
