My kitty just doesn't seem to want to give me a break...

To do a rundown- when we got him, he had ear mites and ringworm, both of which were taken care of. Then a couple of months later, the black stuff came again, turns out- mites. He scratched one evening, busted his eye. Got antibiotics for the eye, mite medication for the ears.

Fast-forward a month later, all better...except...his ears are CONSTANTLY filling up with black gunk/crusty/red-ish. The vet did a cytological test and came back with nothing. No fungus, no bacteria, no mites. He went in for castration, then a day later swallowed a piece of string which the vet had to remove from his behind...so basically I should be renting out a room at my vet's office because I've been visiting them every week for the past month and a half. In the midst of all of this, we forgot about his ear.

Well, this morning he woke up with one of his eyes closed- again. Looked inside of ears, dirty, again, despite me cleaning them all the time.

I don't know what to do anymore. Honestly, I don't know where to turn. What could be causing his ear problems? Could it be related to his eye? A friend suggested it might be a systematic fungal infection, but wouldn't that turn up on the ear swab which came back negative?

I gave the poor guy some nano-silver ear spray which he HATED, and put some cholrapheminicol in his eye which he was given last month for the eye problem. I will call my vet, again, although I'm starting to feel like I'm not just a burden to them but to everybody...I just can't seem to get him better. Otherwise, he eats normally, is chipper (well, not now after the ear stuff) and generally in super health.

Any advice/experience would be helpful. I've been posting a lot here, it's so nice to know there are people I can turn to for advice!

It's possible that it's allergies causing the ear issues.  Food allergies often effect their ears (believe it or not
)

What are you feeding him?

He could actually have a yeast infection in his ears.  Ask the vet to culture some of the gunk.  You could also ask the vet to do a deep ear cleaning (under sedation) and clean everything out.  We used to do this with our old cat once a year.  Then the vet used BNT ear meds to clear up the infection.
