No Interest In Wet Food - Should I Be Concerned?

Hi all! I did a search of this very topic on your forum, and although I found some very informative information, i still have a few questions.

I have 3 cats, who I've had for 3 years now, and since day one, I've fed them 1/3 of a 5 oz can of wet food twice daily, with some dry food mixed in throughout the day (in small quantities). I've always fed them a good assortment of wet food brands, (Merrick, Nature's Variety, Go, Halo), and they pretty much have a different flavor every day of the week. None of them have even been what I would consider "picky eaters." Now my cat Brian, in particular, has always been my best eater. I wake up in the morning, and as soon as my feet hit the floor, he's in the kitchen waiting by his dish. He's the type of cat that jumps up on the counter and tries to shove his face in the cans, and devours his plate and tries to steal his brothers food as well. Well in the past month or so, he seems to have completely lost interest in his wet food all together. He sometimes will still run to the kitchen in the morning, sometimes not, and there's no enthusiasm....like he makes no effort to go over to his dish....I end up placing it in front of him hoping he'll eat...sometimes he does, other times he takes a lick or two then walks away. This would be cause for concern (which it really is), but when I go to the hard food bucket, he's there in a flash and eats it all up very quickly. I have always been a big supporter of a wet food diet, esp with having 3 boys, and the worry of kidney stones is always there....but I'm sort of at a loss. I hate to see him go hungry, so I eventually just cave and let him eat the hard food instead. Long story short, does anyone have a similar experience with something like this? What did you do....any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated!. I just want my happy eater back :(

i would withold dry totally and bring in some new canned to tweak his interest. You do not want to end up with a male kibble addict, nothing but vet bills as he ages.

When was his last vet visit? Drastic change in eating behavior could be a sign of illness, best to rule that out before anything else.

Is he rejecting all the brands that he used to like? It might be a bad batch of food -- their noses can sense something different when we can't.

Have you tried toppers? My cat goes crazy for bonito flakes, and I can get him to eat most things by putting them on the food. If he likes his dry, you can crush the kibbles and sprinkle them over the wet as a kind of topper.

As long as he is eating something, dry or not, don't get too stressed out over this. Take your time and figure out why he isn't eating the stuffs he used to like. Your anxiety and frustration will carry over to him. Keep feeding him stuffs he will eat in the meantime. Remember, the best wet food means nothing if he won't eat it.

Thanks for the advice and sorry for the delay in response. I had already had an appt booked for him at the vet, before this started, just for his yearly checkup. She took his temperature (which was normal) and everything else seemed fine. She said he was down a pound from his last visit, and that she would check him again in 2 months time to see if his weight has gone down anymore. We didn't do any blood tests at that visit, but if there is a weight change in 2 months, we will do that then. As it is, hes still not eating the wet food, but neither are my other 2 cats really. It's just disturbing to me because he was always my best eater. I use a variety of brands, so I don't think tainted food in the culprit. I guess I will continue to give him dry food, as I'd like to know that he's at least eating something. So frustrating :(
