My 8-year-old Siamese mix, Eve, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure last spring. We had been going to the vet a lot to try to remedy the vomiting issues that had cropped up over the winter- vomiting whole meals, sometimes after both meals of the day and with significant weight loss. It took a long time to realize she had congestive heart failure because she was always purring so the vet couldn't hear her lungs and heart very well.
The vomiting reduced when I started crushing her food and soaking it in water (can't afford wet food, daycare costs more than I make until the oldest starts 5k next year) and almost disappeared after we started furosemide. Eve was also prescribed a second med to increase her heart function, but it caused severe vomiting and diarrhea so she can't have it.

It's been a few good months, but now she's starting to vomit more frequently again. Does anyone have any ideas of what to do to reduce her vomiting? She has been overgrooming on and off since her illness started, but there hasn't been an fur in the vomit lately.

It really all depends on WHY she is vomiting.  If it's her food, then you need to switch to another food.  Which dry food are you feeding her?   Could be something in that particular brand or flavor even that disagrees with her.  It could be that she has IBD, in which case she would probably need something low carg, but even Friskies Pate (wet) would work.  It's pretty inexpensive.  But you could try a different dry food if money is a problem

Maybe this article will help you in choosing a new food:  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/choosing-the-right-dry-cat-food

If the vomiting continues, though, I would definitely follow-up with the Vet, or at least give them a call about it.  Oh!  And be sure if you transition to a new food that you don't make the switch all at once.  You need to add the new food to the old a little at a time or she may not only vomit, but also have diarrhea.  Add maybe 1/4 of the new to 3/4 of the old for a day or two, then half and half for a couple of days, then 3/4 of the new to 1/4 of the old, then all new...assuming she does ok with the new

Thanks! I don't think it's the ingredients in the food. We tried that before the CHF was diagnosed. My other cat has food allergies, so they are always on a limited ingredient diet. They had been on Natural Balance Duck & Pea for years with no problems. We switched to Salmon & Pea last winter to see if it would help the vomiting and it did not. Eve is sensitive to poor quality food (Eukanuba, Purina, etc.) but that vomiting is a different quality (if that makes sense) and the food also causes diarrhea.

Has anyone else treated CHF? What worked for your cats?
