I want to build Matt and Midnight a cat condo/tree.

I have thought as far as using a 2x2foot base, and 6foot cedar fence post, cut in three to make the base level...but I'm not sure where to go from there. Matt is 18lbs, so my main thought was it has to be sturdy. Now that that's out of the way, I want to add amusement....any ideas?

I've never made one; only bought.  I think the base of mine is about that size.  It's rectangular though; not square.  It might rock a little when they go flying up or down but it's never tipped.  Even when my son tried to climb it the other day.  How tall are you wanting to make it?

@Matts mom  ...I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but I found this site that gives instructions on building a cat tower .. It looks like a basic plan but sturdy .. It does not show how to add carpet but I think you can still add it if you want .

That site looks great. I don't have much by way of tools- just a Cordless screwdriver and a staple gun, but I can rent a saw from Home Depot, or maybe borrow one from my Dad. i'm sure I can  figure out the carpet, or my Dad can help.

I think about four to five feet...I don't want a gigantic thing, but I want something high enough to discourage him from hopping up on the kitchen table "for the view" lol. I've looked at towers in stores, but they all seem to wobble, and with Matt being so big, it worries me. On top of that, I doubt that he coul lay on those tiny little platforms - they look as though they'd be perfect for a 9-12lb cat, but not for Matt, who is about 18lbs.

If you are basically  just looking for a   window seat for him another thing you could try is to put  a dresser/bureau  that you don't use in front of the window . Embellish it a bit buy covering the top  with carpet and maybe put a cut down cardboard box on one end for him to nap in .. Most cats love boxes ..  You could also attach some carpet to the front or sides for him to use as a scratching area ..
