I did it! Dropped one of the neighborhood strays off to be neutered, well spayed if he in reality turns out to a female but I think I noticed evidence pointing to him being male. They asked for a name and I realized my daughter hadn't named this one, so I quickly thought of Piggy since he will take over any food I lay out, after he gobbles up his own. As a result I have taken to feeding the others indoors.
Poor Piggy cut his paw trying to escape the cage, was bleeding pretty bad, vet said they would clean it up. So my questions, when any of you have a cat fixed who comes home the same day, do you keep them in the cage over night? I can't keep him indoors, except for maybe the garage. I have shelving in there that he can climb if he feels threatened, but I can try and make sure there are no spots that he can jump on, hopefully preventing him from trying. The garage is a questionable location for him, since my 5yr old Joshua will most likely attempt to sneak peeks at him, opening the door and giving piggy the opportunity to escape. Joshua is at that age where no means no, only when someone is looking. If I keep him in a cage, not Joshua, although the Idea is a tempting one, kidding, when feeding is appropriate how will I manage to get food in there? where will he go to the bathroom? I don't want him getting soiled because I won't be able to bathe him, he has never allowed me to touch him.
I plan on fixing as many of the colony I have around my home. But 3 others were witness to what happened when the cage finally closed on one. Wondering if they will know better now? I had it set not to close for over a week now, and have been feeding inside of it, to make sure I could catch them. But today was quite a task, as Piggy's momma was trying to enter the cage too. And she has not weaned her 8-9 wk old kittens yet. How much longer should I give her? One is a runt, weighing 10-12 oz less than the others, and is getting over a respiratory infection, feel like she needs her momma's milk still. Momma cat (that's what I call her, hmm wonder how I came up with that one) is the one populating my neighborhood, and her milkshake brings ALL the boys to the yard!
So any advice would be great, this is the first pet I have ever fixed.
I have about 4 hrs before I must go get Piggy.

Yes, just keep him in the trap overnight. You can place puppy pee pads underneath in the event he urinates, etc...

As for feeding, the Hav-a-heart traps have a door in the back that you can slide up and place food in. However, he would be fine going without food until morning when you release him.
