Hello all.  I've been caring or Kramer, an orange tabby abandoned cat , i just dont think he, and his brother Benny whom I had to have euthanized a year ago due to a terrible eye infection, are/were feral....granted it took awhile to get them to trust me and longer still for them to let me pet them while they ate....anyway, Kramer showed up nine days ago with a broken right front leg....i set up the have a heart trap (i trapped them and had them neutered)but Kramer is pretty perceptive and he took off.    9 days.  i assumed he had gone off to die.    he came back last night absolutely ravenous....i could still pet him while he ate and he crawled into the heated hut i created for him on the deck.  he looks so very miserable.  i know i can only do so much for him here, a half 81mg baby aspirin every other day, and i also know he won't be able to defend himself out there in the woods in his present condition or even if it heals, which i have heard happens....but it will heal the way it is now and he will never be the same.

we have quite a bond, Kramer and i....i've been in touch with Hope for Pets here and have been told that the routine Kramer would have to go through to have the leg fixed would be very difficult for him, even though i had him and his brother in my house in an empty bedroom for 12 days post neutering surgery!   they even started to play with toys.....but i know this would be a cast and quiet and vet checkups once a week for 6-8 weeks.    he would go insane.   but i look at him and cant imagine making the decision to euthanize.    i have loved these cats as my own.

any words of advice?   i'm so grateful......

Hi again, just pjosted about my feral buddy Kramer and his broken front leg.  i'm reading alot of posts about people bringing ferals into their homes and the ferals eventually adjusting.  i'm reading more about feral behavior vs. stray behavior too and seriously wondering if Kramer isn't just a stray who was terrified two years ago?   any quick motion around him and he freaks.....but i can sit with him while he eats and pet him and even put flea and tick prevention on him.   but now he is in great distress and obvious pain.    sigh.

If he allows you to pet him, then he isn't a feral. If you take care of him, get him veterinary care, and feed him, he will become attached to you and adjust to being your pet, likely within a few weeks. Even if he is semi-feral, he will adjust and become socialized with a little TLC.

No, he wouldn't go insane. If you can do so, please get him the veterinary care he needs ASAP. Even if he doesn't get a cast, broken legs can heal on their own with pain killers and rest--but see what the vet says. He does not sound like he is a feral, but a stray, and that he recognizes you as his caregiver or he wouldn't come to you for help when he's hurt. There is no reason to euthanize an otherwise healthy young cat because of a broken leg. I took in a 10 month old female true feral two summers ago. After spaying her, the vet tech noticed an odd lump in her hip. I learned from an x ray that someone had shot her with a gun several months prior and the bullet is lodged in her pelvis. It broke her leg, and the leg healed on its own, but crooked--so she walks with a gait and cannot jump very high. I took her into my home and she's had no desire to leave. She is not a lap cat or affectionate, but she sleeps on my bed and sometimes allows me to briefly pet her, and she loves to play with a wand toy with me. Somehow this cat survived one of the harshest winters in history with a broken leg and no home. My tomcat feral whom I care for on my porch brought her to me to share his food bowl two summers ago--I'm pretty sure she is his offspring--so perhaps he was providing her with food by hunting before she was able to make it to my block. The point of this story is to let you know that cats are tough little survivors, that there's no reason to euthanize an otherwise healthy cat with a broken leg, and that your cat can indeed adjust and live a happy life indoors with you. The initial discomfort your cat may experience while healing and adjusting to life inside is well worth a life time of safety and  happiness having a home with you.

I agree with MsAimee.  Also, now when he is hurt, and did come to you to get help, the window of easy fostering is now wide open again, almost as when he was a little kitten.

Helping him now, you make two things at once - help him, and turn him into a socialized home kitty.

That is, if you afford, etc.  As I imagine the vet wont do it for free...  Even if I hope you will get a discount.

Tx a lot for caring!

Good luck!

I agree again with MsAimee.  I wrote a very similiar post in your other thread.

Good luck!    @sequingirl52

Ps.  I will now ask a mod to merge together all your three threads, as they are about the same cat and the same situation.   :)

You dont need to do anything, just wait calmly, and do proceed to report or ask.

Stefan and Ms. Aimee are correct. He obviously trusts you or he would not have returned. It may be awkward and a bit uncomfortable for him at first but he will get used to the idea. You will need a lot of patience but he will be so much better off.
