This will probably be long, but I will start from the beginning so nothing is left out.

3 weeks ago my 5 year old mancoon, Baby,  started spending a lot of time in the litter box. I noticed his urine was very bloody and he started vomiting as well. I took him to the vet and they said he had a UTI. They gave me 2 medications and sent me on my way. His UTI seemed to have cleared up within 2 days after bringing him home.

Saturday morning (5 days ago) I noticed the same symptoms again. He was spending a lot of time in and out of the litter box and he was throwing up many places around the house. I just thought he had another UTI and I planned on taking him to the vet on Monday, as I was already very busy that Saturday and my hands were tied. Sunday morning came and he now started to cry when he was in the litter box and he became very sluggish and hiding in dark corners in the basement (which he never ever ever ever does) and I knew right away something bad was going on. I hesitated before rushing him to the emergency vet, but the feeling in my gut persuaded me to go around 6pm Sunday evening.

At the emergency vet they knew right away it was a blockage. They ended up putting in a catheter and gave him fluids to help flush it out. They kept him over night and i picked him up in the morning. When i picked him up I transferred him to my regular vet and they continued to hold him for about 30 hours. During this time he still had his catheter, and had 2 fluid packs flushed through him, as i couldn't afford any more. They took his catheter out around noon on Tuesday and I was able to pick him up that evening. They told me to make sure he is urinating and they told me that reblocking can occur.. They sent me home with 3 medications this time.

It is now Thursday and I am a little concerned if what is going on is normal or if he is reblocking. I have been feeding him Hills c/d and mixing in in small amounts of water with it as well. He has been making many trips to the litter box without any results, or if any they are small little pea size droplets. However, about once every 6-8 hours a decent amount of urine is expelled. I have also noticed that he is leaking urine.. When I pick him up i can feel it on my shirt, i can see droplets on the floor, etc. Is this normal? Should I be worried? Very strong smell of ammonia too.

Please help :(

Also, the urinalysis came back with few phosphate crystals, over 100 red blood cells, 20-30 white blood cells. I do not currently know his pH but during the time of his first UTI 3 weeks ago it was fairly neutral (5-7).

Any advice on to if his re-occuring trips to the litter box with no results and leaking urine is normal or not would be helpful!

Welcome to The Cat Site; sorry you're having problems.
Leaking urine is not normal, but under these circumstances may be, temporarily.
Does the vet/you know WHY Baby keeps on blocking. It may take a couple of days for the antibiotics to kick in: I assume that is what the vet prescribed (as well as pain meds??
Is the Hills c/d dry or wet food?
Neutral is NOT 5 to 7, it is more like 6 or 6.5. In other words, it is a specific number. I think you should find out what that number is, for comparison, if nothing else.
Ritz (female) is prone to UTIs. When she was having an episode, she didn't leak urine and she never vomited.

When my cat was catheterized for a blockage, he leaked for about a week. The vet said it was ok & from my experience with taking care of my elderly grandparents, catheters seems to mess up your body & it takes time for you to regain your ability to hold it in well. I had the same thing with my Rocky where I'd pick him up & he'd dribble everywhere. I just picked him up with a paper towel under his butt. It takes time for them to go back to normal size pees at normal frequencies. As long as he's peeing, that's good. If it goes back to only little drops in the litter, every single time, then it's time to go back to the vet. Since all this is very stressful for the cat & stress makes this worse, many suggest getting some calming treats at the store. Hope he feels better!

Hi, I am in the very same boat, same timing.  Ring your vet, don't sit on it and you can't rely on advice from lay people.  Every cat and situation is different, your vet knows your cat and will know the best course of action.  My vet has charged me just over GBP 800 and has allowed me to pay in installments.  This may be an option to you too, please ask.  Unfortunately, this rotten condition has dire consequences.  I wish I could help you more.

Thank you all so much for responding, it means a lot to me that there is such a strong support system for issues like this.

Before everything happened I was feeding him Frisky's Tender Centers dry cat food. And just recently after this whole mess we put him on Hills c/d wet cat food.

After posting this I went to check on him again and still no usage of the litter box. I noticed that there was a steady drop of urine coming from his penis. He wasn't squatting or digging. It was just simply leaking out as he walked, sat, or laid down.

I ended up going to a new vet this afternoon who I have heard wonderful things about. (my previous vet has always been super super expensive and I am a college student who has no way now of paying for tuition next semester as of last weekend).

This new vet said his bladder was very full and he had a partial block that was soon going to turn into a full block if left untreated. He was going to charge me $200 for catheterization, meds, hospital stay, EVERYTHING. when it had previously cost me $900. He said signs were pointing to it being a mineral problem and that basically my cat had a pile of sand sitting in the bottom of his bladder from the food I used to feed him.

Instead of paying for the unblockage and going through this stressful time again of possibly reblocking, I agreed to do the PU surgery. My old vet quoted around $1500+ for this surgery where this new vet only charged me $700. At this point I had to borrow money in order to make this work as well as set up a playment plan ( I had already opened a care credit account for the emergency cath ).

My baby is currently in surgery and will be able to come home tomorrow without ever having to worry about a blockage again. The vet has yet to go into any details about life for my cat after his PU. Do you guys know any information or care that goes with this procedure or things to ask the vet?

He did say my cat should have been put on s/d not c/d in the beginning since the block as assumed to still be there. I imagine I'll continue him on a special diet from now on...

Thank you guys for your concern and help..

I haven't had to deal with the PU surgery, but many others on here have. If you search the forums, you'll find tons of past threads. And horray for a fairly priced vet!! It cost me about $2000 when my cat was blocked (twice in 2 weeks) and I was in college too, so I feel ya! Mine also had tons of sand & no stones. We did s/d for a few weeks, then c/d forever after. From what I understand, PU surgery recovery is long and tough, but you can do it. I hope all goes well!

Thanks. I want to reach thru the computer and give u a big hug. I know what u r going thru. This new vet "sounds" great. There are so few good ones around.

It's tragic the damage that dry food is causing. Most people are unaware of the danger until it's too late.

I pray everything works out fine for you.

God bless.
