I'm posting this here because I'm really not sure what else to do at this point. My kitten Felix has been having a tough time since he came home from the shelter. I've taken him to the vet twice and he's a.) gotten a parasite preventative, b.) gotten de-worming medication, c.) gotten coccidia medication. He was diagnosed with coccidia, so I'm not expecting any miracle cures. I know for a fact he was not put on the long-running stuff. He got a 2-day liquid treatment, and I'm supposed to take him back to the vet on Sunday for a check-up.

He has a great appetite and drinks plenty of water, is gaining weight, plays well, and is as loving as ever. However, his stool is still loose. It's not a diarrhea or liquid consistency, but it's long and stringy, not solid (though he has had a few bowel movements which are considered "normal" since I've had him. However, there doesn't seem to be a particular thing that helps bring it about.

I hate leaving him for long periods because due to the looseness of it, it often sticks around his butt (nothing that can't be wiped off, but I have to check after him every time he uses the litterbox which is a hinderance for the times I'm away. If he was to sit down it would get on something, and since he has coccidia, it would make it harder to clean the area).

I really don't know what to do for him at this point to help him until the medicine takes effect. I was told that this medicine, I should probably see improvement even within 24 hours, and I did, but then the next stool was loose again. I will be taking him back to the vet on Sunday, but I don't know if his bowels are related to the coccidia at the moment since they do improve then get worse then improve again. Any advice/suggestions aside from taking him to the vet again? If this symptom cleared up, I would feel better about leaving him during the school day.

Sorry Felix is having a rough time of it--as you are too.
The only thing that comes to mind is: what food was he fed at the shelter and what food are you feeding him now?
Change in food/food sensitivity can cause diarrhea.
I would also ask your vet if you could give Felix a probiotic (human kind is fine); might settle his gut.

I am feeding him exactly what the shelter was: Royal Canin Baby food (he's 12 weeks old). He did not improve on a bland diet, either. :[

It can take a while to get over the coccidia because the normal treatments don't give the parasites, they just interrupt their ability to replicate so you have to wait for the whole population to die off before there is a cure, and that means medicating for a good deal of time.....

I think he was given ponazuril though which apparently does kill the coccidia unlike traditional treatments? He had 2 doses of it and that's it, not a daily dose for a week.

I want to add that today there was similar symptoms. I came home from school to find that his stools were completely normal today- no mess anywhere, normal color & consistency. He even cleaned it up well in the litterbox! Tonight, it's back to being loose again. I hate feeling like he's getting better only for it to come back hours later.
